No costume venture is complete without a trip to Display & Costume. I think they have a rental department, but they mostly cater to people like me who enjoy cobbling together their own costumes from various parts. They most recently saved my butt this past New Year's Eve by carrying fake Uzis. (I attended a James Bond-themed party.) The toy guns looked real enough that only minor modifications had to be made. Best of all, the Uzis have an awesome rat-a-tat sound effect. (NOTE: Toys R Us and other toy stores do not carry any guns other than Nerf or "ray gun"-type guns anymore because kids apparently get shot up by cops that think they are carrying real guns. Also, there's some issue with morals and teaching kids that guns are bad or something like that...)
Display & Costume is definitely a one-stop shop and prices reflect that. Some things are cheap (fake Uzis) and others are not (fabric). They have a section in the back where you can buy fabric and assorted ribbons and other fabric novelties. Mostly, the store is a haven of accessories for almost any costume you can dream up. They also carry party supplies, including more unusual items like fake palm trees for your luau-themed parties. At Christmas, they have a whole room of elaborate Christmas decorations. Perhaps best of all, the store is located near the Northgate Mall, Pacific Fabrics, and Target, so you can always stop in at those other stores if you don't find everything you need!

As a recovering sewaholic, it's hard to walk into a fabric store and not get just a bit of something. I just went to Nancy's and I thought, "Man, this place has all the fabrics I dream about, but can never find."
If you just want some cheap stuff, go someplace else, but if you're looking for unique, interesting, and colorful fabrics, then this is the place. I'm making my wedding dress and am reconsidering fabrics cause I saw so many awesome ones at Nancy's.

If you have a boat or just need some canvas
work done, Seattle Fabrics has excellent
service and craftsmanship. Having a boat
canopy is never cheap but I found a fair
price for excellent work at Seattle Fabrics.

I was in desperate need to re-upolster my dining room chairs and I took this opportunity to browse into Hankcock Fabrics. Although the prices were a little expensive for my taste, I was able to find something within a reasonable budget that looks great with my dining room set up. I would suggest this place to people who are the artsy type. It gave me a lot of inspiration and I love the variety.

You'd find knitting and sewing notions: Capitol Hill. Stitches carries fun fabrics (fun designs, bright colors, tempting textures), a decent selection of yarns, and many accessories. They also carry "Sublime Stitchery" cross-stitch patterns (which must be seen to be believed - fantastic, creative) and offer crochet, knitting, and sewing classes. A small but bright shop, Stitches is welcoming and full of things to discover.

Even if you don't sew, fabric stores are a great resource for connecting people with other people who do sew. While you're there look at all their fabric samples and get a good idea for what it is that you want. Check out Jo-Ann Fabric's website, http://www.joann.com/ they have stores all over this region and you can find some deals and coupons on their site to help save you money.
