I LOVE coming to this place!! There's a lot of stuff crammed together in a small space and the parking can be difficult, but it's worth coming to check it out if this strikes your interest bone! They have percussion from all over the world - not just the African drums! I also like the fact that they have resources for teachers there (I'm certified to teach music) and instruments for little ones - my nearly 3 year-old has a great collection.

It was so hard for me to find child care for my daughter. The small in home providers just don't have the activities that my daughter loves but are able to give more personal care. The big chains have all the activities but not enough supervision. Mother's Place is the perfect marriage of the two. They have a large outdoor play area, arts, crafts, sciences, swimming, computers, everything. Most important my little one loves it there. She wants to go every day.

I had never even touched a sewing machine when I signed up for a sewing class through the community college, and now I have no FEAR! I took a sewing class with Cathy, along with 7 other people, and we all learned the basics and gained the confidence to work on our own projects. She was the most patient instructor ever. Great instruction! I highly recommend checking this place out.

The Seattle Pacific University Website www.spu.edu has a classfied section. Click on childcare and you will find GREAT postings of babysitter/nannys that are available right now. You can also create a 'wanted' post with your EXACT (dates, times, children's ages, etc.) needs and you will get responses from college age sitters. I posted an ad and got many responses from great sitters as well as other parents about nanny-share opporunities. I would recommend settting up a new free (yahoo or hotmail) email account when posting an ad like this.

Having a new baby is an adjustment that's impossible to prepare for until it happens. Then, when you're in the middle of it, it can sometimes feel very overwhelming and isolating. That's where PEPS comes in. PEPS is simply a group of new moms who get together with a leader (with their babies in tow) to share stories, support and frustrations. I think the success of a participant's individual experience in PEPS can be largely dependent upon the group they end up in, but it is also a function of the participant's willingness to share and enjoy the experience. It was a great experience for me and I know of many moms who speak of it as a lifesaver at a challenging point in their lives.

More
Dream Dinners in West Seattle allows me to go in once a month and cook meals for my family to freeze and then enjoy all month long. The menu changes each month. You select from fourteen entrees (I usually cook 12 entrees, split them in half again, and leave with 24 meals for my family of two adults and two young children). Ingredients are set out for you, along with each recipee and containers for freezing.
I've been hooked for the past six months, and can't imagine going without Dream Dinners.
I recommend going with friends so you can make it a night out afterwards. Consider getting a group together and donating a meal to a friend in need (new baby? family crisis?)
Leslie, the West Seattle owner, is happy to offer fund raising options for local groups....a great way to try it out with friends.

I have had two children move through this program and now their infant cousin is there. It is a great place. My children have a sound background in Spanish which is critical to their future. They were both more than ready to succeed in school, both academically and socially. Their teachers have commented on how well they handle conflict. Perhaps most amazingly, in a total of nearly 10 years of childcare (5 years x 2), my children only missed 5 days due to illness - that's total, not each. Ask other parents with kids in daycare--this is unheard of!..This is a clean, healthy place...even if it is under Jiffy Lube!

My wife and I took classes at the Seattle Academy of Fine Art two years ago. They have an outstanding program, with an emphasis on realism. You will learn how to "see" in a new way and how to tranform what you are seeing into visually recognizable drawings of great detail.
Margaret Davidson taught the beginning drawing classes we took - she was wonderful. You'll also find a class full of dedicated and motivated students who are a pleasure to be with.
The school's web site is:

For a sample of what I learned in "Foundation I" drawing class, see my web site:

I had my daughter enrolled in this school this year. The school is pretty small, but they are not overcrowded. The classes' size is small, they have always at least two teachers present in the class, working with the kids (by playing, of course)
Nice school for preschoolers. (the schedule is only 2 or 3 days per week about 3 hours/ day)

For being in the University District (which can be a little sketchy), this VW and Audi dealership and auto service is very nice! They have great service and will provide you with a shuttle if you need to get somewhere while they have your car. I took my car in to fix the paint job because it had been scratched by another car. They were great! They fixed my car in record time and only charged as much as they quoted. I really enjoyed their staff too. They were very helpful!
