I have been going to this office for more than 5 years I believe. I have heard that recently (I'm not quite sure how recent) there had been changes in dentists and possibly owners. I'm sure other commenters here have more accurate details about that.
I have ALWAYS had trouble with the billing practices here. Here are a few to illustrate:
1. I had double "Premera" dental coverage through the Marine Reserves and my other work employment. Through both I should have been completely covered and Oak Tree Dental was going to invoice them. Oak Tree could not get the invoicing straight and kept sending me bills for the work, so that I could pay them and my coverage could "reimburse" me. Through trying to work through this issue with Oak Tree, they told me that I was "no longer welcome at the office". I was floored at their incompetence in handling the billing and then their reaction to their mistakes.
(I had moved overseas for a couple years, and when I came back I explained the situation to a new office manager, and they said they were fine with seeing me again.)
2. In 2006 I was told that I needed some major work done. I think it was called "scaling", where they go deep into your gum pockets. I was told that I was in serious risk for this to get drastically worse... The bill was going to be huge with my insurance paying most, and I was going to be out of pocket $400 or so. TWICE I had confirmed the pricing saying that I was not comfortable with paying more than that and they specifically confirmed that this was the cost. Immediately after the work they asked me for another $350. I was sore, shocked, and bordering irate. I asked how this could be and they said that they had "made a mistake earlier, and this is what the cost would be". I asked if there was a way to discuss this and come to an agreement, but they threatened if I did not pay it, it would be invoiced to me until eventually it went to collections. I begrudgingly paid. This had happened on 2 previous occasions.
I'm a bit embarassed to say that the hygienists had been nice and I was pleased with the work done, but after reading through these similar experiences, it is clear to me to find a different dentist. Clearly not all dentist offices are this shady.

When I tried this new place for my regular cleaning and check-up, they told me that I had 3 new cavities. I found that odd since I have only had one very small cavity before - ever. When I expressed my concern, I was made to feel like I didn't know my own body and that I needed these fillings right away. They sent me away with my "plan" for care - with several hundred dollars to be paid by me when the work was done since insurance only covers 80% of fillings.
I couldn't shake the feeling that something just wasn't right. When I had been waiting in the lobby for my appointment, every person that came out (and there were a surprising large number for such a short period of time!) had to set up appointments for their "plan" for major work to be done.
Lucky for me, a co-worker recommended that I get a second opinion from Dr. Larry Adatto. He found that I did not have ANY cavities! I have been going to him ever since and am thrilled with my experiences there (and how often can you say that about a dentist??).

I ALSO TOOK MY CHILDREN TO THIS DENTIST OFFICE FOR A COUPLE VISITS BECAUSE OF THE LOCATION. THERE WAS UNNECESSARY WORK PERFORMED ON TEETH THAT WERE GOING TO FALL OUT IN A COUPLE MONTHS AND THEY TRIED TO GET US TO DO MORE. I WENT FOR A SECOND OPINION - REFERRED TO DR SMUTKA IN SAND POINT (BY SOMEONE IN THE OFFICE AT OAK TREE). WE HAVE BEEN WITH SMUTKA EVER SINCE AND ARE DELIGHTED WITH HIS WORK. I WOULD NEVER REFER ANYONE OR EVER GO TO OAK TREE FAMILY DENTAL CARE.

We spent all of 30 mins in the chair and it cost us $450 to extract an already loose baby tooth. It was causing some pain and made it hard to eat, so they recommended pulling it. My mistake... not asking what the fee was. I'm sure they count on this oversight greatly. I never dreamed they would charge such an outrageous fee. This amount has made our Tooth Fairy very unhappy, but she came just the same. Guess this dental practice has their own Tooth Fairy... and she's very greedy.

Their #1 priority here is FINANCIAL...meaning they will try their best to push recommendations, that when you go elsewhere, other dentists would say is completely unnecessary. They also scheduled me a for a specific time and date and even left a voice mail confirming this time...then I show up and they tell me it's actually an hour later. I was annoyed and did not come back because it was their mistake...lo and behold I receive a bill in the mail for $200+ for MISSING the appointment, when they were the ones who actually scheduled me incorrectly and EVEN LEFT A VOICE MAIL of this time. Furthermore, they make it extremely difficult for you after that to get your services done elsewhere--I can only get one xray a year from my insurance, and they had all those records--when I tried to get them to fax the results of that xray (MY RECORDS) to another dentist, they intentionally made the xray look difficult to read (shoddy copies) and this is highly convenient for them with their "cutting-edge" software. All I have to say, is, thanks to them, I am waiting for my policy year to end so that I can finally start fresh and see a decent dentist.

I had a cleaning at Oaktree Family Dental in Oct 06, they charged ny deductable twice. After I explained this problem to them, they blamed my insurance company Wa. Dental. I contacted Wa Dental, who said it was Oaktree's fault. This finger pointing has been going on for 7 months, to date without resovle. As a final act, I have been referred to the Wa Dental quality assurance commission. The bottom line, both Oaktree and Wa Dental are poorly managed.
I also agree with the other complaints about Oaktree forcing deveral procedures and or products on you. None the less my hygenist is very good, and it a shame she has to work for such a horrible dentist office.

Here's the positive - As far as skill, they do a fine job. It's a large practice and they accepted our insurance. Most of the employees were nice, but one (or two) bad apple(s) spoiled the whole lot.
Here's the problem - Don't rework your schedule and then expect your appointment to actually happen. I had multiple cancellations and had arranged babysitting months in advance. They surely didn't want me to bring two crying babies. This happened about 5 times and I am extremely patient and understanding, having worked in a medical office myself, however I was treated as an annoying patient as soon as I spoke up and said something -asking that they try to fit me in or have another dentist there finish the procedure (which is against their policy). The very aggressive billing receptionist was so incredibly rude to me and my husband that I was totally shocked that they keep her on staff.
But I can forgive canceled appointments. I had planned an elective procedure for months. We called oak tree to make sure everything was worked out with insurance and to find out the out of pocket amount for the procedure. Based on that information, I decided to have the procedure. I paid the out of pocket amount and figured all was well. Then two months later I get another huge bill from Oak Tree....why? No one could explain it. They just kept resending the bill. The same aggressive and rude billing receptionist didn't not back down until several months of continued contact and debate. It was finally decided that they charged a higher amount than originally agreed to, but because it took them so long to schedule and reschedule me, the price had gone up since they originally submitted it to insurance. We were treated so poorly by the billing person that I could never go to a dentist that would hire someone with such poor interpersonal skills. There are many dentists in the area that respect their patients time and money. This is not one.

I have not been to a dental office in years because I have a phobia of the dentist. On arrival everyone at the front desk was friendly and were able to answer all of my questions. The hygienist was very thorough and explained everything that was going on. Everyone from the assistants to the doctors made sure that I was comfortable with everything that was going on. Everyone was also very gentle, which made the experience even better. I recommend Oaktree family dental and I myself will be returning in the future for all cleanings and dental work.
