St. Joseph's Church is showing it's age. The sanctuary is large and drafty, especially in the winter. Folk inspired art decorates the dark beams in the gloomy interior. I understand that such a large parish/school needs a large church, but if you go there, be sure to layer your clothing.
PROS: Large
CONS: Dratfy, Outdated, Gloomy

Great question. I've struggled with finding a good Catholic church for when I want to go to mass.
I live in the north end, which makes St. Mark's my closest parish. It didn't seem to fit so I try to make my way back to St. Joseph's on capital hill. I really like the atmosphere. It has a good mix of young and old. The music seems to be more like what I grew up singing.

I have been to a number of different Catholic churches in the area and this one is definitely one of (if not the most) open and friendly churches, especially if you tend to be more liberal and less conventional. I recommend the 5:30 mass on Sunday evening. It is a contemplative mass and draws a young adult, more single, slightly less family focused crowed. The Deacon and fairly new Pastor are great people and will make you feel welcomed. This is the only place I really felt truly at home as a single person. The other masses are more traditional family oriented (the 9:00 is packed with kids). Really, this Parish has it all and I really think you will find your niche here.
PROS: Open Friendly tends to be more liberal
