If you are reading these reviews before choosing an eye doctor, then you are SMART. If I had done so, I would not have gone to Dr. Gay, because I had the exact same experience as the other unsatisfied customers that have posted here.
I did not have to wait when I arrived at my appointment, but I was trapped for two hours in the examining chair, unable to see without contacts or glasses, my eyes dilated -- while she indeed talk nonstop (and not a talking-while-doing talk, but a stop-everything-and-listen-to-me talk), answer phones, chat excessively long with drop ins that came to pick up their hardware, and introduced me to some very unique yet archaic ways of finding my prescription. And this wasn't my first rodeo... I've been wearing glasses and contacts for over 20 years.
That appointment was 7 months ago, and she JUST called me to let me know my glasses were in... which, at the end of the appointment, we had decided to not even order!
She is nice, but if you want a thorough yet professional, sterile, expedient, AND friendly clinic that uses computers and keeps patient records out of plain sight, the Eye Clinic at UW Medicine is excellent.
Pros: Good location, but worth the trip to go elsewhere!
Cons: Where do I start....

Dr Gay was the fifth eye doctor whom I have visited in about 15 years. I had the best experience with her, and would recommend her.
I chose her because she is within walking distance of my home, and I did not want a repeat case of not being able to drive after having my eyes dilated. This had happened on two other occasions, and the first time (at an eye doctor near Valley hospital in Kent) I wasn?t even warned. It was dangerous driving back to work afterward. Dr Gay discussed dilation up front, and said she could do this at another time at no extra charge. As it turned out, her dilation was very modest and I could easily walk home (or drive) and use my PC 30 minutes later.
I liked her flexible hours ? up till 8pm wed, and every second Sat. Most of the others in the area were weekdays only, during working hours. I learnt from her about my eyes, about why one needs glasses, about cataracts and what causes them, and about the importance of wearing a hat at all times outside in the PNW. I normally use cheap dollar-store reading glasses (1.00 around the house, 2.00 at the PC and 2.50-2.75 to read). She insisted that I bring these along to compare with what a prescription would offer. I thought he exam was detailed and thorough, although I am not an expert. She tested my eyes then made up temp glasses to show me what prescriptions would be like. She had me compare these with my reading glasses. We concluded that I was fine with my existing cheapo glasses.
I spent from 715 to about 0845 pm with her, and greatly enjoyed sharing stories with her. She is chatty, yes, but was a refreshing change from the other eye doctors, all of whom were boring and none of whom suggested that compare my existing glasses with what they had to offer. The guy at Costco sold me expensive progressives and I took them back for a refund several days later. Dr Gay is a great story teller. Of course, if you are in a hurry maybe you should tell her that up front. There were two clients in front of me and she was done with them fairly quickly. She was perhaps 5 minutes late, which did not matter a bit. I cam away feeling that I had received TLC and an eye exam and a good community experience. How often does one get to visit with local merchants these days. As they say in Central America: los norteamericanos tienen demasiado prisa todos los días. Que lastima.
Pros: Good exam, explained eye issues & glasses, no hard sell
Cons: Spent about 90 minutes - fine by me

I have been going to Dr. Gay for several years, both at her former office at Globe Optical and her solo office in Wallingford. I have always had a positive experience.
Yes, she talks a lot and yes, she sometimes is behind on appointments. Yes, she is a bit disorganized. However, she has always come through for me in terms of service. She is kind, compassionate and affordable. When I first went to see Dr. Gay, my insurance covered the visit. After I changed jobs, the new insurance did not, yet, I still went to Dr. Gay. I have referred many friends to Dr. Gay and their experiences are the same as mine.
I think the other reviewers on this site need to relax a bit...life is way too short!

Everything the other reviewers have commented about is right on. This woman talks endlessly (increasing the amount of time the appointment takes), is very disorganized, and I've been to doctors' offices in third world countries that are cleaner and more up-to-date than hers. While I was in my appointment, other patients walked right into the exam room; there's no semblance of confidentiality. I've never before had problems with finding contacts that work for me, but it took her three months to find me contacts that were satisfactory. One pair she ordered me weren't even my prescription. Absolutely ridiculous! She has no idea what she's doing. I will never step foot in her office again. If you are looking for an optometrist in the area, try Dr. Dana Cocke at (206)522-3131 He comes highly recommended.
Pros: location
Cons: everything

This was the weirdest doctor's appointment I have ever had. I went to see Dr. Gay a few months ago. This is definitely a one man show, which would be fine if she was organized and professional. There are stacks of papers everywhere including patient information cards that were scattered around. The phone rang several times during my exam, and she stopped to answer the phone to book appointments. She even made fun of one of the patients once she hung up. I think she examined my eyes for 15 minutes and rambled endlessly for 45 minutes. It could have been from a rock, but I'm pretty sure there is a bullet hole in the front window. I wanted to leave in the middle of the appointment. I want to see another doctor, but I cannot go for a while since my insurance won't pay for it. I am not using the prescription she wrote me. I felt like I was in a Saturday Night Live skit. It's a joke. Do not go here.
Pros: Can get an appointment quickly...but don't!!
Cons: Everything!

In October, I had my eye appointment. She was more than 40 minutes behind schedule, and kept having to stop the exam to answer the phone. I was never called as promised when my contacts/glasses arrived; finally I stopped by in December. After waiting for 45 minutes, she dug though huge haphazard piles of paper and eyewear, and found me my contacts and glasses. However, the glasses most certainly weren't the ones I ordered, and made me slightly dizzy/nauseous when I tried them on. She convinced me they were indeed mine (even though they were brown, and I had specifically ordered blue) and that I just needed to "get used to them" After two weeks of dizziness, I returned, and after another long wait told her that I didn't think they were mine. She told me the lab must have screwed up, and she'd sort it out and call me when she found the ones I'd actually ordered. It is now June. I have no glasses, no refund from the $143 I paid for the glasses, and my insurance benefits won't cover me getting another exam and glasses for another year and four months.
Cons: disorganized, always behind, doesn't deliver promised product/service
