Always fun to walk by and to see what they are making. If you are lucky you'll see them making the cheese curd in the viewing room. Very entertaining and also educational to see how things are made. They have samples that you can try, I like the freshness and very flavorful. The store serves sandwiches as well with their cheese, and it's always packed. But worth the line up if you want some good high quality cheese. Their cheese curd is really expensive though, a little container is close to $8. I want to cheese curd to make poutine but can't get myself to spend that money. I would recommend stop by this place grab a sandwich and read on how cheeses are made.

This is my favorite specialty store in the Market--and not just because I am Italian! Their selection is almost overwhelming. The have all sorts of Italian imports--olive oils, canned items, pastas, even cookies. They also have a refrigerated case full of take-home goodies like lasagna, ravioli, gelato and stocks. The cheese counter is a sight to behold and has more selections than anywhere else I've seen. The also have salami, bacon, sausages, olives and all the makings of a perfect antipasto platter. The fresh ricotta is heavenly. The sales staff is really friendly and knowledgeable and you will probably need them. Upstairs they keep all of their wine, and the selection is decent for a shop of their size. Again, the staff is fantastic and will steer you toward the right bottle. You really can't go wrong with anything from this store. Also, their website has tons of recipes that will help you infuse some creativity into your meals. Shops like this make cooking and entertaining fun!

Pioneer Organics is a great company and they deliver a great product. With today's busy schedules it is hard to eat the way we all know we should. Even as a vegetarian, I would find myself serving the same veggies and buying the same fruit week after week. This service brings a big box of fruits and veggies right to my door every 2 weeks. The best part is being able to modify the delivery to fit both my tastes as well as my menu plan for the week. They send an email before your delivery and you have a few days to modify it. You can also add groceries and other items to your delivery for a reasonable cost. The fruits and veggies are very fresh and as many as possible come from local growers. Best of all, you know you are doing something healthy for you and your loved ones. One thing to note is that some of the items tend to spoil faster than what you'd buy at the grocery store, given that they don't have any preservatives and come right from the grower. This is especially true with the citrus fruit. But if anything ever arrives in less-than-perfect condition, the customer service team is quick to make amends. One you have this service, you'll be hooked.

I've always been impressed with the great variety of produce at Rising Sun. It would be nice if there were more organics, but it's an excellent place to buy items that aren't heavily sprayed anyway (onions, broccoli, bananas in particular). Best of all, I often walk away with a couple of big bags for under $10. I make a point of stopping here on the way to Whole Foods to see what I can pick up on the cheap.

Someone posted a comment about Tony Hill the owner being rude & arrogant recently (which has been flagged down). I've been going to WS since he opened it and disagree but more importantly, he sold the store over three years ago so she had to have the wrong person in mind (unless she waited three years to post). He now writes books and lives abroad according to his former staff.
Apart from that, the spices are just as amazing today as they were when they started. It has to be over a decade now. LOVE the Chai and the curries. Plan to spend lots of time there, I do every trip.

We have been fans of A&J for over 20 years.
We used to buy our spring lamb for Easter at Jones Bros in Ballard and were heartbroken when they burned and closed shop because my parents & grandparents used to shop there. Finding A&J was a Godsend. A&J provides the BEST lamb ever. They will bone and roll it and even save the bone for your dog if you'd like. Their stuffed pork chops are FANTASTIC, too as well as their assortment of breakfast sausages.

I have read the reviews on this location, and I was actually very surprised. I have been there on more than one occasion, and have never had a problem. I have been helped by many of the clerks there. The morning and night crew especially are just the sweetest people. I love their chocolate, especially their strawberries. I don't know why anyone would have a complaint about them or their items. They are wonderful.

The address given here is no longer accurate---Fresh Fish has moved up to 80th, near the intersection of 80th and 24th (next door to Larsen's Bakery). This location is much better than their previous Market St one! It's a nice place to stop in for lunch and grab some fish while you're there to cook for dinner that day.

Top Banana,l located on the corner of 15th NW and 65th, across the street form Ballard High School in Ballard, is tops! The name says is all. This is an excellent, reasonably priced seasonal fresh produce stand. They are open 9:00 am to 7:00 pm until November 5th this year(2005). They will open again for fresh produce sometime during the first week of February.
During the winter, beginning on the first day after Thanksgiving until Christmas, they sell Christmas trees, garlands, and wreaths.
Top Banana is a good community member as well as an excellent place to get quality produce for a decent price.
