Last Wednesday I had a business dinner here at El Portal. While we were concerned at first for the lack of people being seen through the windows of the restaurant we were pleased once we started getting food to our table.
The former bartender of El Gaucho, Joe Valencia, started this dining venture about 11 months ago in a location that hadn't been great for any of its former tenants. I hope that this time El Portal will be able to get past the locale to draw in visitors because the food is worth it. Joe happened to be there the night of my dining experience and if you've ever seen Joe from his years at EG you'll be barely able to recognize him. He looks great but gone are the clean cut styles and he's a bit more bohemian - which frankly I liked.
In his own restaurant he's been able to relax and enjoy life a little more. My dinner guest is a former chef and we both enjoyed our meals and we were given a good wine recommendation that wasn't high budget. My meal was the nightly special of a pork tamale - it was wonderful and really hit the spot for me that night. My friend had the daily halibut with a wonderful green sauce that really got the taste buds moving. Prior to our entrees we had shared the tuna tartare El Portal style. Having been a fan of a similar dish at EG I was very pleased to have a good experience with the version at EP - although some people might need to get used to the green color because of the mix of ingredients included in this version.
I've heard great things about the table side guacamole so I'll definitely go back. Be sure to try this place out because if they don't get business they'll fold. The restaurant business is tricky and if a good thing comes to town you should "feed" it so it stays around!
Good luck, Joe, you're doing a great job!

Broadcast news media leave a lot to be desired these days, but NPR continues to outshine the lot. In-depth analysis of relevant topics that affect us all and outstanding journalistic style have made me a loyal fan of KUOW 94.9 FM for years. Their local programming is considered some of the best in the NPR network and they're one of the best radio news and talk stations in Puget Sound, if not number one.

Here ye, here ye:
Listening to FM Radio in your car is SO February 2006. It's April and now that I have a CD player I'm totally over it.
I wasn't always so lucky as to have a midsized, adult oriented car. As a previous owner of a full sized, elderly oriented vehicle I have plenty of experience with what the Seattle Radio world has to offer. When all is said and done, I whole heartedly insist that KJR (95.7) is your best bet. While KEXP is sooo cool to like (and genuinely pretty good) sometimes you want to - nay need to - sing. Warm 106.9 almost promises to play Phil Collins at least once an hour and 93.3 makes me feel at home in the ghet-to, but KJR just plays really, really good songs.
Case and point, I just visited their website and some of the last ten songs they played included: Heart, Doobie Brothers, Billy Joel, Genesis (Take that 106.9! I don't need you!), John Mellencamp, Van Halen, and Hall & Oates. I mean...really.

Kiss 106.1 is a radio station based out of Seattle, Washington. They play mostly rap, rock and top 40 and other stuff that most teens would enjoy. I really enjoy the morning shows with Jackie, Bender, Sammie, and Jubule. They're absolutely hilarious and quite frequently interview celebrities and gossip. The best part about kiss 106.1 is the kiss v.i.p. section where members can answer daily trivia questions, rate music, click links, or answer surveys for points. These points can then be redeemed for chances to win ipods, shopping sprees, or other prizes. They can also be redeemed for concert tickets and backstage passes. Pretty much you can find anything worth your while to spend your points on. Some are contests and others are first come first served guarenteed. This is a great program and I highly recommend this station and the program.

KMPS is a country radio station out of Seattle, Wa. In the past couple years they;ve been recognized as the best country radio station in the country by CMT. They have sponsered many concerts that I have been to from Brooks and Dunn to Blaine Larsen and they've done a very good job MCing the events and bringing in big name entertainers to seattle and the surrounding area. Not only do I listen to them because they play country music but I also respect the fact that they hold a drive for St Judes hospital to help raise money for research and taking care of the kids. The station management shows that they're compassionate and I feel that is something that I can proudly support.

I've had some pretty bad experiences with other companies before coming to t-mobile. Even though they say it's "no mobile," I haven't found this to be the case in Seattle. I get reception almost everywhere I go. I love the customer service, and their little extras that make life easier. For example, I can call in to see how many minutes I have left. When I was with AT&T, I couldn't do that over the phone. Rather, they forced me to log in online.

Here ye, here ye:
I’m totally obsessed with RadioShack for absolutely no reason and this location on The Ave is no exception. The chain had horrible commercials with Teri Hatcher & Howie Long…and even worse, somehow managed to make Ving Rhames look completely uncool. Not to mention after every purchase they ask you for your zip code. I’ve got the customer / merchant relationship down to a science – throwing me off like that makes me verbally and mentally stumble as if they had asked me kill their Grandma. Then I can’t remember my zip code because I’m frazzled, and end up blurting out something like '98bannanaWhat?1apartment3$What?". It’s humbling.
Nevertheless! There’s something about the idea of RadioShack that is the complete epitome of gadgets, electronics, robotics, and all that is good and industrious about the future. The whole ordeal is very ‘Short Circuit’ and ‘The Explorers’. Whenever I walk within five feet it’s like it’s acceptable to just yell out ‘CYBORG’ or ‘JIGGAWATT’!
I rarely ever need anything from RadioShack and when I do it’s only because my dad tells me I do. But it’s still fun to walk in and pretend I have a half built space cruiser in my garage that just needs a little more juice. I doubt the guy believes me when I can’t even remember my zip code, but what else do I need all the extension cords, amplifiers and converters for?

I have used this Kinko's several times for volume printing and smaller jobs, both for personal use and business use. They are thorough when going through your order (to the point that it can be kind of frustrating, but I think it's just their "quality assurance" bit), and my orders have always been ready on time, and often a few hours before. They can also deliver your finished print job to you, within a certain range. These are all things that I'm sure are characteristic of any Kinko's in this area.
If you're doing self-service copies, however, DO NOT go here! Go to any small copy shop on the Ave and you can save up to 3 cents per copy for self-service. I'm not sure how the prices stack up for volume or full-service copying, however.

With tens of thousands of songs out there, they KJR FM play the same stuff day after day after day after day. The same 2-3 songs over and over by groups and artists like Boston, The Eagles, Journey, Elton John, .38 Special, etc. Good groups/artists, but these folks have recorded more than 2-3 songs each! Mix it up. And, voice mail messages to those supposedly in control go unacknowledged and not returned. There isn't a single station in the Seattle area that doesn't play the same lame stuff over and over and over. Lazy? Who knows...
