Sonic Boom Records is a great alternative to Tower Records--they haven't got the largest selsction of the best sales, but they do attract local artists. I met Le Tigre at a record signing there. The interior Decor is chaotic and kitschy with posters of album art chopped and remixed on absolutely every surface. They could use working CD playes to preview used records.

The Sonic Boom location in Fremont is a little different than the Ballard store, at least in the layout. They have moved all most all of their vinyl records to an annex store, so the CDs and records are in separate locations with different hours, although they are close together. They stock a pretty good selection of CDs here, both new and used.

these guys really know music. if you are looking to sell music, they buy all kinds of eclectic things and pay a FAIR price. Sometimes the staff can be a little snobbish when it comes to answering simple questions. (it is the Hi-Fidelity Syndrome.) Overall, though a great place to shop.
PROS: great staff, great neighborhood
CONS: Parking can be a pain.

This is my favorite record store in Seattle. You can visit any of their three locations and you'll always find something good. Great selection, and good prices to boot.

I remember when Sonic Boom was in a small little building in Fremont. Now, they've moved, opened another store in Ballard and are set to open yet another one in Capitol Hill. This store has great used CDs (they usually don't buy crap) at great prices. They also have a great used vinyl selection as well. I found a copy of "U2-3" at the Ballard location (U2's first vinyl release in 1979). The new stuff can be pricey, but that can't really be avoided. The staff is pretty friendly and the atmosphere is great.
Pros: Good used stock.
