I finally discovered All for Kids when my youngest turned two. That was two years too late. I love the wise and friendly staff, and I do all my b-day present shopping there. And, who can argue with supporting an indie book seller? They have AWESOME suggestions if you aren't sure what to buy.

There are ALWAYS at least 3 books at Alphabet Soup that I cannot leave without buying. I have found books from my childhood, as well as books I never knew existed. Money goes a lot further here than at Barnes and Noble, and you can bring in books for trade. PERFECT. And Janet (the owner) is awesome.

When I'm downtown, I only watch movies here or at Cinerama; both by AMC. It might be because Pacific Place is newer and therefore nicer than other cinemas. But I love the northwest-themed atmosphere and how unique it feels compared to the typical multiplex one can get used to. For the same price as other theaters, AMC Pacific Place is the preferable choice downtown.
The only downfall is that it won't show ALL new movies coming out. New movies seem to split between here and the Regal Meridian down the street. I always pray that the movie I want to see will be here...rather than at Regal.
Pros: atmosphere, location
Cons: doesn't show all new movies

Arundel Books has a good selection of used books, most at reasonable prices. Of course, as with any used book store, finding exactly what you want can be a matter of luck. It is really a better place to browse and find books you didn't even know you wanted than to search for a specific title. One thing I found a bit aggravating at Arundel Books is that they mix in new books with the old so you never quite know whether you've found a bargain or not without checking the price of each book. Overall, however, it's an enjoyable place to spend a lunch hour browsing.

I used to drop in this place during my lunch hour. I’d browse for a while, and they’d never bother me. They’ve got tons of used and new books in this place. The prices for new and used are right on track, and they have a huge selection to choose from. The nice part is that the people there know what they’re doing, so they can help you out if you ask.

Located on Capitol Hill, Bailey Coy has always been a source of great new books to read. They have a nice display of new books w/ written recommendations from those on staff that have read them. Even better, they're not your typical mass market releases, they're books from local authors or newer authors that I wouldn't have heard about otherwise.
Some people think they're clever and ask for recommendations only to buy at Amazon where they think they're getting a better deal. Keep it up and Bailey Coy will go the way of the dinosaurs and you'll have nothing to read but Tom Clancy and Ann Coulter.
If you do end up paying $2 extra a book, get over it, b/c Bailey Coy also has a frequent buyers card, which ends up being equivalent to a free book after reading 10. And, if they don't have one in stock they'll order it for you.

Ballard Books is a great neighborhood bookstore. They have a great science fiction section with anything you could possibly want. I wouldn't say it's my favorite bookstore but it is definitely worth a trip, especially if you like bargains. They also have an excellent fiction section, with new and old books.

Although I try to shy away from frequenting chain book stores, I enjoy coming here. I can walk here from work on my lunch break, and windowshop or buy a magazine. There are two floors to this place, so they manage to have a lot of books, and CDs. They have some sales and a few discount shelves, but for the most part, the prices are retail. They also have a cafe which usually has good coffee and tasty treats and some lunch items.
PROS: Nice cafe, great magazine and book selection.
CONS: Pricey, few discounts.
