Their shelves have more interesting items per square foot than other book stores. Their expansion to used books followed this forethought, because they're not big enough to effectively compete with the larger stores unless they work smarter. Many like the 'historic district' look of their dungeon of a cafeteria with their ultra-cheap books lining the walls. The whole place has character and class.

There's just something about losing yourself inside Elliott Bay's creaky, wood lined interior when it's rainy outside. They carry an in-depth selection of books in all genres and are happy to order anything you don't find. Though, the real gem of this store is its staff. The people here are true book lovers and can offer up a suggestion with even the minimum idea of what you might want. Make sure to check out the staff reviews throughout the store ... over the years I've come to rely on them.

Elliott Bay Book Company is the best independent bookstore! There is a great selection and I appreciate their big used-books section. They have many shelves with recommendations written up by the staff, a nice cafe downstairs, and they have author readings practically every night (sometimes in other locations, and the schedule can be viewed on their website). I LOVE browsing at this bookstore--it is a unique bookstore with so much variety!

A great bookstore is so valuable. New and Used books on all subjects. If you know what you want Elliott Bay probably has it. If you don't know what you want you will probably find several books to buy. They offer a good selection of children's books, along with a little castle playhouse.
Fabulous author readings. A decent cafe. Late hours.

I have not found a more enjoyable bookstore. I recommend visiting this store many many times. A real Northwest treasure. Even if you never pick up a book, which will be hard to do, it is just fun... More
I have not found a more enjoyable bookstore. I recommend visiting this store many many times. A real Northwest treasure. Even if you never pick up a book, which will be hard to do, it is just fun to walk around. Bring your out of town guests here. You can also grab a lunch in the cafe downstairs.
