The inside of this enchanting bookstore in Pioneer Square reminds one of a rather elaborate tree house lined with books. The book selection here is quite good. Though if you want something really serious I would go to the University of Washington bookstore instead. Customer service is absent, which in my opinion is mandatory in a good bookstore. There is a used section in the back and a cafe in the basement.

This is the location where the cafe in the TV show "Fraiser" was modeled after. Elliott Bay Books only rivals Powells Books (in Portland) as far as size and volume of books they cary. The place is huge and I can't imagine they wouldn't have any book you were looking for. The stacks reach from the floor to ceiling and there are many rooms of books to look through. Down the stairs and below the main floor is a nice little grotto-like Cafe where one can sit back, read a book and drink wonderful coffee while just lazing the day away. A must see for locals and tourists alike.

This seems to be the biggest independent bookstore in the city. It is great, and if it weren’t for the parking, I would only go here to purchase books. They also host the most readings I’ve seen in a while, and by pretty good authors too. The store is laid out well, has a good staff, and has an awesome café downstairs. Try the mac and cheese. It’s great.
