One of the charms of used book stores is that half the reason they exist is that the owners just love acquiring and being surrounded by all those books. If you actually want to come in and buy something, they'll consent to sell it to you, but they'll go out of business sooner than pander to the public at large.
Don't like cats? Don't come to Twice Sold Tales. The people who run it do like cats, and they'd rather have the cats than have you. What they do worry about is if you mistreat their cats, and there are a couple signs warning about this.
The recommended book shelves hold unexpected nuggets of literary gold, and a random wander through the place produces an armful of everything you weren't looking for. It's true that the owners aren't going to come up to you and make nice and ask if they can help you -- but they also won't give you a hard time if you hunker down on one of the wooden stools and just read. They also have classy taste in literature. It's nice to see English majors find a niche in the world.

I used to come to the Capitol Hill location on Fridays, just before midnight, and at midnight almost everything went on sale. But a few years after the other locations opened, the first storefront wasn't doing as well, and shrunk by a third of its size; fewer catwalks, but more of that catbox smell. Having Half Price Books move a few blocks away probably hurt them a lot! Some of its former employees complained about the neurotic aspects of working there, but it's still hip. I come by occasionally, because they still have some unique finds on occasion, but they seem to have been dwarfed by their aforementioned new neighbor.

Twice Sold Tales just off Broadway on Capitol Hill has a ton of books--the science fiction section usually has a great selection.
The cat bridges above your head are novel but the cat boxes stick even though they are cleverly disguised.
The staff/owners has/have often been rude but then the next time almost friendly. They do seem at least to know what they ahve if you ask for a specific book.
And they are open pretty late.

this is one of my favorite places in the world!!!!!!!! if you love books, this is the place for you!! this is a used bookstore, the majority of which, are in excellent condition and they also usually have multiple copies of more popular books! also, if you have books you are done with, and don't want to hang onto, you can bring them with you for cash or trade value!!!!!! so, cozy up in one of the corners, and don't be surprised if you turn around to find a furry friend rubbing up against your leg!

Twice Sold Tales is your typical 2nd hand bookstore. Just off Broadway, you can skip the ease and cost of a regular bookstore and enjoy the search and thrill of victory (or defeat) in the many shelves of partially organized second handness. The problem, of course, is that their is no inventory, so unless it's a big name book and unless it falls neatly into one category, some books might take hours of searching to find, sometimes for nought. On the other hand, it might lead you to finding other books you'd forgotten all about wanting to read, and usually this means you can get all these books for about the price of one new Harry Potter. Twice Sold Tales is a second hand bookstore, which means that it's shelves have some character, but not necessarily the characters you're looking for.

This store never seems to be closed, be it 12 noon or 12 midnight. I really enjoy browsing the shelves for some new find or a dusty, older edition of a classic favorite. The prices are great for used books. Also, they do a Staff Favorites display that is always good for finding new things--the people who work there have great taste.

Twice sold tales is my favorite place to buy books - you can spend hours in there looking through all their stock and they have lots of really sweet cats who live in the store to keep you company. It seems to be open all the time, and they have some kind of special that discounts the books 25% after midnight (used to be, anyway). Very reasonable prices and decent selection.

I like cats, so I don't mind their company as I browse the stacks. It was great when this place was open all night, so I was sad to see that end. Also, haven't been in a couple months, but did they sell off half their store and reduce their size?
Best feature is the list of stupid questions behind the cash register. Love it.
