I felt like the atmosphere was kind of funky (a lot of grey) and the woman waxing my brows didn't crack a smile after I made a joke (and in general exuded the feeling of indifference). That being said, my eyebrows looked great and I paid $5 less than I do at Gene Juarez (which in this economy I'll take what I can get). Overall, I guess you could say I ended up being indifferent myself...

When my younger sister came to town we decided to treat ourselves to a spa day. After reading the reviews we decided on Derby Salon. It looked like a hip, fun place so we were excited when we booked their "girlfriends" package. We made appointments and then confirmed the day before that our selections were booked correctly. The Derby advertises the package we choose as "Time to catch up with a friend while you enjoy some pretty pampering" however when we arrived we were told that one of us would have to go before the other and that there would be a hour gap between services. They did finally work out more reasonable timing but only after I insisted. The manicures are done by the front door (which was left open to the draft) and pedicures are in back so my sister and I wouldn't have been able to visit at all. The cosmetologist who did my mani/pedi had training to do nails but complained about her profession and frankly did not do a very good job. I felt the services were rushed (I left with gritty exfoliator around my jaw-line and in my nose) and the customer service was poor. I would have left when they argued with me about the timing but my sister really wanted the experience and her spa services did seem slightly more professionally managed.

I am so blown away by the service I have received at this salon. They offer all the spa services you could get, but at affordable prices. I have gotten my brows done during their "happy hour" and I have always been impressed. Their pedicures are awesome!! Yummy smelling products and so relaxing (they even offer wine!). The front desk staff and the people that work there always seem so happy and helpful...the must actually LIKE working there! If you are looking for a Gene Juarez corporate place, this is not your match. But if you like the same services, just a lot more reasonably priced I would HIGHLY recommend Derby.

I wanted to really like this salon, and I'd read a good review of Tova, one of the stylists - so I called to make a haircut appt., got their message machine (during business hours?) but I did receive a prompt call-back. I made an appointment for the next day.
When I went to go get my haircut (after paying for parking) - a receptionist (??) who seemed to be about 16 greeted me - I told her I was here for my haircut with Tova, and she said, "That can't be - she's here but she's working the festival" (there was a neighborhood festival going on.) It turns out they'd written down my appointment for the wrong week. Did I get an apology, or did they even offer to try and find me another stylist who might be able to cut my hair? Absolutely not. She looked at me like it was my fault, and then basically sat there, not knowing what to do. I understand that mistakes happen, but they should apologize and offer to make it right - I was very disappointed and won't be returning here.

I went to Derby's on the strength of these reviews for a facial and eyebrow wax. Perhaps there are other better facialists but mine was not good at all(Stephanie.) Also, the environment left MUCH to be desired-I am surprised no one has described the grim grey and dull orange walls, fluorescent lighting and noise from the adjacent room! And the bad muzak on the tiny cd player was god-awful. All of that said, I still could have had a great experience with a good aesthetician. I like the products very much and the sequence of nearly 1/2 hour of face/neck/shoulder massage interspersed with the treatment was a good one. But this couldn't overcome the incredibly perfunctory, like-bad-sex, "techinical" massage and facial I received from S. I don't know if it is always this way or this was a bad day, but at one point I even laughed out loud just because it was sooo absurdly brusque in its execution.

I recently moved from Seattle to San Francisco and let me tell you, it is SO hard to find a great salon. There are a lot of hoo hah type salons that overcharge their customers and treat them like crap, but Derby is not like that at all. I started going to Derby for waxing when it first opened and I was amazed at their prices and the quality of their services.
For those of you who love the quality of Habitude in Fremont and Ballard, but don't love their snobbery, check out Derby. The owner of Derby previously worked as an aestetician at Habitude, but left to open her own salon. Forget driving downtown and paying loads to park, Derby is neighborhood friendly and they know what they're doing. They have great deals, like happy hour eyebrow waxing, and bottom line, they treat their customers very well.
Long story short, sort of, I haven't been able to find a salon as great as Derby since I left Seattle, so go check them out. You won't regret it.

As a previous frequenter of Hairmasters and Rudy's, I finally found a solution that excludes a barber and/or myself in front of a mirror with blunt paper scissors. A basic haircut here is generally $35 and the extra $15 is well worth it. They have a happy hour brow waxing from 4:00-6:00 and offer other various services that I’m too cheap to attempt (anywhere), but hear are good. They sell and use bumble and bumble, sell other various handbags and art, and are in general much better conversationalists than Shaky Hands McChatty at your local Great Clips.
