The place does look rather dive-y, the front desk staff is a bit sketchy, and the clientele is mostly geriatric, but this is actually a very good place to take kids for swim classes. You don't have to be a member to take classes there. They will let you start anytime and prorate the class fee (usually $64 for 8 classes, if I recall correctly). The instructors range from pretty good to great, the pool is big and has a lot of shallow-water space, and the water is usually fairly warm. The dressing rooms/showers are fine, with lots of lockers, benches, etc. We've gone off and on for several years and overall, it's been a fine experience.

Anyone who has looked into the sport of scuba diving can tell you that it’s not cheap. Learning to dive alone can run you $300 or more. Discount Divers Supply in Seattle is sensitive to this issue. I’ve bought more than half my gear there and remain a regular customer. They sell quality gear at reasonable prices. They also are the largest on-line dealer of used equipment. Check out their web site at www.discountdivers.com. Customer service is also quite good there. I have received lots of help with decision-making on gear purchases. They are also a great source of info on local dive spots, dive travel and just shooting the breeze.

This place is privately run - not a Seattle City run pool - so it costs a few bucks, but the water is kept warm (which the anklebiters love) and the lessons are apparently pretty good. My wife got a "membership" or some equivalent and it was very inexpensive.
The pool up in Montlake Terrace apparently has a loooong waiting list. My wife also likes the GreenLake pool, but you need to check the schedule as it gets a lot of use from regular lap swimmers and other adult types.

I stopped by this shop today after recognizing the name from a "SURF BALLARD" bumper sticker I got a laugh out of the other day. I have been getting sandwiches next door at Paseo for sometime now, and knew that a surf shop had opened up next door, but until now had not put the puzzle together. :P
These guys have really put a lot of work into making the surf shop a place that you want to hang out...complete with a couch, flat screen tv, Xbox, and fireplace. lol They also recently opened a coffee shop upstairs.
I haven't surfed in years, so I can't really say to much about the surfboards other than the fact that they seem to have a nice selection of both long and short. :P
The guys who work there seemed genuine in wanting to get to know me, and welcomed me to hangout over at the shop the next time I grab a sandwich next door.
It's too cold for me to surf in the PNW, but I do plan on stopping by to say hello the next time I'm in the neighborhood. In the mean time, I'll be sporting my new SURF BALLARD hoodie. :)

One very important thing I took from getting my SCUBA certification from Underwater Sports is how much they stress safety. They have no patience for horsing around and will only train you if you take it seriously. They offer certifcation based on the PADI course. I feel like I am a better diver because of it. For a very reasonable price they offer classes that last about 2 weeks with 2 days of dive testing off the shore at Alki. If you take your classes in the fall the cost for the classes is greatly reduced due to the weather.
