The eggplant fries were great.
The wait staff was friendly & professional.
The prices were high.
Pros: Bold Flavor Combination
Cons: Too Trendy

I am very critical,& this was one of the best dinners i've ever had.Thali for a long weekend-first hot crispy eggplant fries & excellent margarita. Then a very filling and generous thali with perfectly cooked duck breast & copper river salmon. The many pickles, vegetables, & soup were
exciting and delicious.Fiddleheads with chile, parsley walnut soup, asparagus salad, cauliflower gratin,etc..etc...
Flavors I will never forget, balanced and thrilling. Too full for dessert, so I'm going back soon to try the tempting warm date cake and house made ice creams.Very good prices, very good service, very nice evening!
Pros: Food bliss/awesome veggie options/Quality bartender
Cons: not a single con

I have been to Poppy many times and have continually been thrilled with the food and the ambiance - In fact, it is my new favorite Seattle Restaurant. Yes, the portions are quite small, however I have found the tastes to be so robust that I have never wanted more than what was served. I am always impressed with the incredible gastronomic pairings - a bit of one dish enjoyed at the same time as another creates quite a party in the mouth! I am also in love with their gewurztraminer grape juice, a delicious way to enjoy a glass of vino without the zip.
Pros: Ambiance, portions, variety, price
Cons: Parking

I recently took my partner here for his birthday with friends. We, too, were fans of the Herbfarm, but our Poppy experience seemed flat for us. When our thalis arrived it was confusing as to which each portion was relative to the menu description. The food was all about the same color and the portions were tiny. The best part of the meal was the teeny serving of soup. I also thought that the idea of having one menu clipped to a board at the table for 4 people to share at the same time seemed odd. I loved the interior and what they had done with the space, but expected something more impactful for food. I don't know if any of us would return as we were overall disappointed -- but not with our waiter who was great. We are hoping that the chef/owner can modify Poppy's menu from what was initially a novel idea to be more inclusive of people that maybe just want one main course.

No! And i'm even more annoyed that this place has an ego big enough to send a waitress over to our table to ask that question. Look, this place feels inviting. It's a fun, modern, low-key atmosphere that sets you up for an enjoyable evening. The question is, at what point in your meal do you see through all the fiction and realize that you're paying $80 for a meal for two (w/out drinks!), and your food was mediocre at best. Big thali plate for $30, small for $20+. The short rib was all fat, and was supposed to be the "main dish". It was two bites. The small sides were bland, and i spent about 3 minutes thinking the concept of having many plates was interesting before i realized that none of them tasted good. I'm from New York City, and to some people that might mean i'm a food snob. But i'm not. I'm simply a value guy. Because i can get GREAT food for reasonable prices, with the option of having exceptional food at high prices. Poppy is poor food at an unfair price.

the food is good but not worth the price. the highlight of the meal was probably the "eggplant fries" appetizer with honey. wonderful. the thali itself was good, the large plate had a large amount of food but still quite pricey and the flavors were decent but not over the top. i have a hard time remembering anything specific. i LOVE indian food and also generally love indian fusion but this did not stand out for me as excellent. on the plus side, service was attentive, the space is fun and festive and seems like a good venue for both a bigger group and an intimate dinner for 2.

As fans of the Herbfarm, we were eager to try Chef Traunfeld's new restaurant Poppy. Getting a reservation a week in advance was surprisingly easy (via the web site). Parking was not so easy. The staff was extremely attentive and knowledgeable about the food. However, the food itself was average to good. The starters (quite small) were delicious and the first few items of the thali (Green Gumbo, Mashed Cauliflower, Black-Eyed Peas) knocked our socks off. As we progressed through the thail, we were disappointed. The salads (Endive & Celery) were bland. The short rib and stuffed onion were OK. The bread was tasteless. We added the wine flight to our dinner and the pours were quite small. For dessert, we tried the lemon frozen yogurt which was good but not something I'd crave again.
The concept of the thali is fun. However, I probably won't go back anytime soon since what I really want to order would be a bowl of the gumbo and that's not an option. We will be far more likely to visit the bar for the fun cocktails and great appetizers.
Pros: good service, delicious appetizers
Cons: parking, some bland items on thali, not romantic ambience

My wife and I recently visited Poppy because we are huge fans of The Herbfarm. The thali and appetizers were absolutely lovely, but the evening ended a selection of bland and uncreative desserts that we normally wouldn't expect from a restaurant owned by Jerry T. Although I do not recommend the dessert course, the thali is a delicious experience not to be missed. Thank you, Jerry for bringing culinary life to Broadway on Capitol Hill.
Pros: Attentive service, great ambience
Cons: Tasteless desserts

I would reccomend this place to anyone that wants upscale restraunt cuisine at a quarter of the price. What keeps the price down, probably the modern- cafateria like ikeish atmosphere and cheep utencils (definetly ikea). While still more expencive then the typical capital hill eateries (Fixed $32 plate or $22) + appitizers and then Drinks-- the food is amazing and you get to try a ton. The fixed plate is a circular tray that has 5-10 different meals (changes weekly)- we had Quail, Shrimp & Scallops, Potatoes, 2 types of salad, etc... etc...Also- you can just go get drinks & appitizers (the Zuchini Fries are AMAZING!!!)
Pros: Tasting Menue experience
Cons: A bit slow on the service

We went to Poppy to celebrate a birthday with some friends, and were sorely disappointed by the food. While the concept of small taste-sized dishes is fun, the dishes themselves were bland and ordinary. The menu is limited - either a single entree item for $22, or a combination plate for $32 (per person). With drinks, expect a party of 4 to spend almost $200 with tip.
The atmosphere isn't intimate at all - almost corporate. Not a great place for a date.
We had high hopes for Poppy given the fact that the Chef was from the Herb Farm ? but he didn?t deliver.
We gave it a 5/10 for taste / ambiance, and a 2/10 for cost - much too overpriced for the value of the dining experience.
Pros: Location
Cons: Bland Food, High Cost, Poor Ambiance
