The one thing I like about this place is that it's quiet. There can be 25 people in the place and you don't have to raise your voice in order to be heard. This is the kind of place where you go to catch up with an old friend. Fairly non-descript, not exceptionally comfortable but it has a warmer feel to it on a cool autumn evening.

When someone first suggested to me that I come to the Pacific Inn to try their fish and chips, I wasn't too excited as I expected the same kind of fish & chips you would get at any drive-in, but it was true - they were great and definitely worth trying. My only complaint about the place was the loud, out-of-place music they were playing last time I ate dinner there.

I live 3 blocks from the Barking Dog and was very excited when it first opened. They took a nasty dive bar, gutted it and built an interesting space (using some eco-friendly materials). One drawback is that the place gets very noisy when it's crowded. Every time I'm in there I tell them they should get some sound panels for the ceiling but they have yet to take my advice. As for the food, I have had mixed experiences. Some of the food is good and some of the food is bad. Stay away for brunch. I went with 6 people and every person's dish was not good. Some of the dishes I've liked are the fish and chips (mmmm good waffle chips!) and they have pretty good salads. The pizzas are kind of blah and uninteresting. They do have an interesting assortment of Belgian ales. With just a few changes (sound panels, improved menu) this place could be a really great pub.

The Hop Vine Pub on 15th offers a wide array of appetizers and entrees along with an extensive beer list, making it the perfect venue for an evening with friends. From pizza to a hummus platter, to large interesting salads, the food is both unique and varied for whatever you might feel like eating. The beer list has local flavor worth checking out, and while a bit pricey, what can you expect from a comfortable pub on capital hill? The atmosphere is extremely intimate and warm, and the wait staff and bartenders are friendly and ready to strike up a conversation. Definitely worth checking out.

The Tractor Tavern is a great place to see a show in Ballard. They get good bands, both local and national. The Tractor is one place that would benefit from a smoking ban - it can get pretty hard to breathe inside - but overall it is a great neighborhood bar.

Virginia Inn used to be one of our favorite spots, but on our most recent visit it seems that there are new owners and the experience was unfortunately...... not great. They've updated a few things, new paint, etc. the menu (food/bar) is basically the same on the surface but the service was terrible. We ordered one of our favorite dishes (brie app) and it was a very disappointing. (lower quality brie along with skimpy servings of apple slices and bread) I ordered a 'hot toddy' and the didn't have any honey. Instead of asking me if i wanted a different drink, they just served it with table sugar............= not tasty.
In the past the service at Virginia Inn was stellar, but this time there were all new faces and the service was not only unattentive, but several of the servers were rather rude.
we want the old owners BACK!!!!!

The last thing I want when i'm going out for a beer -- either solo or with an amigo -- is a bar like in Cheers where "everybody knows your name". I want to be a wallflower and sink back into the smoky, tchotchke-laden atmosphere and mix in my reading and sipping of malty goodness with surreptitious glances at a bunch of people I don't know. If this is your idea of wallflower-bar-lurking heaven, then check out the Blue Moon. There have been a gillion butts on those worn-out wooden benches and i recently saw a public television late night documentary that said that the Blue Moon is where all the communists and rabble-rousers used to hang out and cause trouble in the 60's. If you live in Ballard, well then go hang with the hipsters at Hatties. Further east? Check into a booth in the back at the Blue Moon. but don't wear nice clothes - it's not a madison park type place. Call me if you go - i'll meet you for a mac and jacks if you buy.

I'd had several friends recomend Pies & Pints and had been looking forward to checking it out for quite awhile. It's a nice little place, the bar in the back is really cozy and everyone who works there is really nice. We were a bit disapointed by the size of the pies though. Luckily I'd had a big lunch because when my tiny little pie came to the table with nothing to go with it I was a bit surprised. I'll go back again but I will just know that a pie doesn't make up a whole dinner.

Tangletown is across the street (practically) from my other favorite bar - Luau. They're both relaxed and good for thirty-somethings. What I like about Tangletown is its versatility. You can go there for an after-work drink with friends, or for dinner (good burgers, fish and chips, salads, etc.). Plus it's big and open and restaurant-y enough that it's kid-friendly. I'm about to have a kid and I'm thinking "where am I going to go now?" The answer is Tangletown. Current enough I don't feel like a fuddy-duddy, but friendly and mellow enough for a new babe.

More
The Chapel on Melrose is all about the environment. Because you see, it's a bar right, but it's in a church...or what looks like a small place of worship, which either appeals to our sense of eccentricity or our lack of morality. Either way, it's a cool place to have a drink. I say "a" drink on purpose, because once happy hour ends, drink and food prices are not especially affordable. The prices suddenly remind you that Seattle is a real city and your paying real city prices. Definitely check out The Chapel for a cool new experience, especially if you can take a walk up to the private balcony, but otherwise, take a quick walk through and check off "Went To Church" from the list of things you've been meaning to do.
