The hours are amazing at this place! 12Am till 9pm. Yeah.. midnight until 9pm... meaning they shut down between 9pm and midnight. Crazy, eh?
Even though they call it the "hip hop barbershop" (because of the hip artwork and the music) they cut all kinds of hair, black people, white people, asian people. As a black guy, I hate going to new barbers because they always screw up my hair. The guy I went to was incredible... did a perfect job, I was amazed.
Price was right too.. i think it was less than $20...

Oh, call for an appointment so you don't have to wait, and make sure you ask for a particular barber. If you don't know one, ask when you call and get to know one over the phone so you don't have to wait.
One problem: I called several times during business hours to make an appointment and no one ever picked up except on the 4th attempt. I even left a message but no one called me back to confirm my appointment time even though the message said they would.

James Alan Salon, in Shoreline, is a neighborhood gem. I was bouncing around from salon to salon but never found the right place to get my hair cut until I started going to James Alan over a year ago. I enjoy a good hair cut, but have very low-maintenance hair and sometimes that throws stylists off. They want to put 'product' in my hair or blow it out in some wacked-out fashion. Not only does the staff at James Alan give superb hair cuts, they actually listen. I've never left feeling as if I got a cut that I didn't like or want. (Ask for Christina!). They also offer spa services--I've had a pedicure. The staff seem genuinely happy and I think that comes from how they are treated as employees. I know the owners are highly involved in the community and it seems that employees are encouraged to do the same. It feels good to support a business that tries to create a healthy work environment for their employees.

I love Todd, he's a great hair stylist and I've never been disappointed. I always walk out of his place with fantastic hair at a price I can still work into my tight budget. He doesn't pressure you into buying products and doesn't judge if you walk in and it's been a little too long since your last cut. The location is easily accessible in Wallingford on 45th close to the 44 bus stop. I love this place and highly recommend it.

I have been patronizing Spin's since my barber left Rudy's to join Spin and his crew in 1999. Spin has a great crew of skilled barbers (four including himself). When my barber called Seattle quits and moved to LA in 2003, I started seeing Jordan. Since then I have only missed one cut with Jordan, and that was an emergency bad hair cut I got while on a business trip in Canada.
Jordan does a fantastic job on my hair (short and straight), but I have seen all different hair types in his chair. He has the most amazing collection of comics and toys on display. He also has a nice display of mullet paraphernalia, but I am not sure that he will actually give someone a mullet.
The atmosphere is very relaxed. Some vintage barbershop seating, local alternative art on the walls, and a huge selection of magazines that seems unnecessary since I have never had to wait more than five minutes past my appointment time.
Women, don't be scared by the term "Barber Shop." I would bet half Spin's clients are women.

More
Thomas and Miguel have got the half-art, half-science of hair down cold. Thomas sculpts designs in people's hair that practically qualify as display pieces for one of the nearby art galleries. Miguel describes his chair as the "computers and politics" chair, and neither the conversation nor the haircut ever disappoints.
These fellows have a world of experience from the actual world, as well as being experienced haircutters. It's kind of like having two energetic, engaging reference librarians, but with scissors. Both men are involved in the community and devote an unusual amount of their time and talent to various worthy endeavors, when they're not tending to business in the barbershop.
It's rare to find a modern-day business that has heart and soul as well as a good product. This one qualifies on all counts.
Enough of the word has gotten out about them that attempts at walk-in haircuts are unwise. Do the smart thing; pick up the phone and call for an appointment.

If you're looking for a hip classic hairdo, Osami's Barber Shop should be your number one choice, especially if you're an Asian guy. I've been going to Osami's for over a dozen years. Even when I lived in Los Angeles and New York, I would visit Osami's in Seattle to have my hair cut.
Osami's is first-come, first-served. Years ago, I would wait for at least two hours to get my hair cut. Nowadays, with most of Osami's original clientele passing away, there is usually a chair available immediately. If you have to wait, finger through the Japanese Manga, the daily paper, or a wide array of popular magazines.
Osami's is not just my favorite barbershop, it's one of my fav hang-outs. It's a once-a-month treat, plus around new year's, Mr. and Mrs. Osami give you a super cool retro mini desk calendar.
Oh, for the budget conscious, haircuts are only 11 bucks. Tip them well.
