I've not been to Scream, but my wife is a hair stylist who once worked at Rudy's Belltown. Just like any other salon, your cut depends on who does it. If you liked your barber the first time, you can request them the next time by calling in advance (though you still may have to wait: it's hard to reserve your barber because their clients are predominantly walk-ins). By looking at the styles of the staff, you'd think all they do is punk/rockabilly styles, but they're all trained stylists/barbers, so most can accommodate individual needs. Here's the rub: they are trained for volume, hence the bad reviews. Some of these stylists are doing 20 cuts in six hours; the more cuts you do, the more tips you get, the more incentives and bennies the company gives you, etc. Rudy's also pushes the staff to move product, so, your barber is a commissioned salesperson, too. I feel bad for the barbers (though, they can make good pay) but they are given no employer paid benefits (insurance, paid time off, etc.) until much later in their tenure, and have to work very intensively. Some of the more aggressive barbers would also hoard customers, making the atmosphere a bit of a customer quota competition - again, the more cuts, the more pay, etc. My wife left there because, for someone who just enjoys doing hair and is focused on quality, the assembly line and salesperson approach doesn't work well for her. I hope that explains a little from the Rudy's perspective. And, yes, your cut with tip will be around $22.

Forget high priced salons, for a bit more than it costs you to get an absolutely horrendous doo at Supercuts or Great Clips, you can roll over to Rudy's and let the cool cats there make you look good. I've been going to Rudy's since college, and let them try whatever they feel suits my hair best, and i've never been disappointed. The staff is friendly and chatty and their wall of crazy celebrity hair pictures and stickers is fun to stare at while they clip away. Just one thing to beware, even when you call ahead and get on the list, the wait can be really long for afternoons and weekends. Call in advance, and try to go during a weekday when they're less busy unless you have an hour to kill looking through their eclectic collection of magazines.

I wouldn’t come to any of these shops for anything more than a basic haircut. That is indeed the only thing I go there for, and they do a decent job. It’s not celebrity status treatment, but it’s cheap and they get the job done. I’ve had both good and bad cuts there. Sometimes the wait is too long, so call ahead to get your name on the list.

My husband and I used to be big fans...but one time we didn't pay attention (got distracted by all of the Andre the Giant posters) and they gave him such a BAD haircut that I had to repair the damage later that night over our sink. Bad news that they would let anyone leave their shop with wet hair, unknowingly with a bowl cut. Ugh.

i used to go to $$ places to get my hair cut; believing that only professional stylists could give me a good cut......and then i foudn rudy's; a chain of walk in shops around seattle that hires good folk, has edge and is cheap (less than $20 for a h/c; under $10 if all you want is a strait buzz cut).
