Satisfying country-French fare served up in a warm, European space in Pike Place Market. Contributor on 05-30-2006

In Short
Chic, scuffed tables, mellow lighting and a long bar for eating and chatting up neighbors combine for a casually sophisticated, intimate feel. Regulars drop in for relaxed Parisian-style lunches, such as ham and Gruyere sandwiches or Spanish tuna served on butter lettuce, while weekend crowds pack the Pike Place Market cafe for the popular brunch, featuring bourbon-battered French toast, baked eggs and steak served with pommes frites.
Country cuisine in an urban setting brings the joys of coastal France to Seattle. Contributor on 11-10-2004

The Scene
Only the French hit such a perfect note of casual elegance. Warm colors and soft lights meld with the cozy tables and tile floor to create a romantic restaurant that even seriously manly men feel comfortable in. Tourists from Pike Place and the attached Inn at the Market show up seasonally, but locals have been filling the tables for nearly 20 years. Service is knowledgeable without being arrogant, and utterly welcoming.

The Food
Bass carpaccio is tender and salty, while the ubiquitous green-and-goat cheese salad is dressed up with tasty onions, beets and beans. Succulent grilled quail with fragrant artichoke sauce is ideal for lighter appetites; hungrier folks should steer themselves toward the lamb loin--they'll never taste a more flavorful piece of meat. The perfectly caramelized creme brulee trio includes vanilla, orange and chocolate-chestnut flavors.
