The best time to eat them is just after they've floated down the river of hot oil from which they seem to be spawned. If you ask, they might tell you when the fresh ones will emerge, and perhaps give you a sample while it is still warm. (It's kind of like being a seal when they're thowing fish at the aqarium.) Their coffee is amazingly good as well. I thought that I didn't like doughnuts that much and 'unfortunately' they have many varieties. They tend to become more 'ordinary' as they cool, but I've heard that they revert to their original greatness in the microwave.

The first time I bit into a Krispy Kreme donut, I closed my eyes and just savored the moment. It just melted away in my mouth. And don't even get me started on the ones that come fresh out of the conveyor belt. Krispy Kremes are something that is best done in groups--hopefully they will keep you from eating too much. My all time favs are the plain (ahh, sugar coated) and chocolate (sugar coated and then chocolate coated).
