Almost any day of the week you can find me at Verite coffee. It's got the things I love about a cafe: friendly staff, good conversation, large windows, free wireless, good pastry, fulfilling snacks, and excellent coffee. It also has the famous Cupcake Royale cupcakes and is very child friendly (there's a playground across the street as well).

I drive over 20 miles to get my bagels from Bagel Oasis, bypassing several Noah's and other bagel shops. And they are worth every extra mile and minute. Raised in the east they are the closest thing to a New York Bagel. Thanks.

Praise allah that we now have a qualified alternative to the evil green machine (not that there aren't some fine local roasteries and all) - but peet's is the gear - great flavor and complexity, and not evil to boot. If you drink coffee and want to be on the side of truth and justice, get it here.

Though Lisa Chick and others have abandoned this joint for Essential (Essentch as we often call it), it still rocks the party. The challah is great as well as all breads. Its packed for breakfast on weekends but worth the wait- very creative menue with all kinds of herbs mixed in and fresh breads/pizza crusts accenting all entrees. Lunch is great too. And how can you beat staring in the window while the bakers frost cakes and roll out dough! Essential could use some windows into their kitchen!

More
The Portage Bay Cafe is a great little cafe in the U-district on Roosevelt right before the University Bridge. They have a little espresso and baked goods counter for a quick take-out breakfast and a sit down restaurant for bigger meals. Their brunch is what they are known for - it's great! They have a wide variety of egg dishes and pancakes. If you get the pancakes they come with a trip to the *breakfast bar* which has lots of different kinds of fruit, whipped cream, syrup, etc. So good. Their lunches are good, too. Things here aren't cheap (expect about $10/breakfast or $15ish for lunch), but they are very good. A note: they get really busy for brunch on the weekends, so be prepared to wait. Also, the waitstaff isn't the most attentive in town, so you might have to flag someone down if you need anything.

More
I bike past Essential every day and smell that good bready scent wafting out. It's all I can do not to stop in every day for a brioche, a croissant, or just a loaf of their yummy bread. They take baking very seriously, and it shines through in their great breads (ranging from crusty baguettes to solid, tangy desem and sourdough to ciabatta), fantastic pastries and beautiful desserts. Good coffee and espresso, sandwiches and breakfast items such as oatmeal are also available. They're open in the evenings and serve beer as well.
The branch in Fremont/Wallingford has an airy brick-walled dining room with good music and newspapers on a rack. A good place to hole up for an hour while drinking coffee and eating a cinnamon roll.

This is the original, Capitol Hill Top Pot - hidden in a residential neighborhood - difficult parking and all. The place has a wonderful ambiance with stacks of books and wood panels and all. Plus the old-fashioned donut is worth the fat and carbs! Coffee is good too.
Only thing: service is a wee bit chilly unless you are a very handsome construction worker, in which case the pierced gal behind the counter will be very nice!
