After making the extremely ill-advised decision of buying a Subaru (we thought it was the perfect car for our lifestyle, but it is in the shop more than our OLD Benz, and doesn't get better gas mileage.....), we have been saved a lot of expense and frustration by the folks at Moss Alley Motors. Having now "compared" prices and service between Moss Alley and the dealer, Moss Alley consistently comes out way ahead on both price and service. They also have filled us in on all the tricks that dealers use to get you to do repairs that really aren't necessary. After several experiences with them, we trust the folks at Moss Alley completely, and somehow always manage to enjoy the experience of having our car repaired there (though why this relatively new car needs so much attention is still beyond us. No more Subarus for us!)

I took my Honda to Moss Alley for a few years and they were pretty good at repairing what needed to be fixed. It certainly was not the cheapest shop in town either. One year ago I took my car in for a major tune up. The car drove great before the tune up but soon after the tune up it started idling funny. Well I took it back to them and they suggested that I replace the idle air control motor to the tune of 300.00. I was not convinced that this was the problem. So, I recently took my car to another shop and the problem was quickly diagnosed as a problem with my distributor. Apparently, Moss Alley broke an important piece of the cap when it was replaced during the tune up and driving it like that over time fried the distributor. Just today, I called them to explain what had happened and to have them pay for the repair, they flat out denied that they are responsible since I took it to another shop for the repair!

These guys aren't cheap but they are honest. I found a couple of consistently good reviews through the car talk website and have been with them for a couple of years. They stick to their estimates and based on budget will even prioritize to accomodate. As well, they will send you a "check-up" reminder for the items that still need to get done. The customer service is great.

Moss Alley Motors is conveniently located on Capitol Hill. They specialize in a few makes of cars, and they do a pretty good job servicing them.
They are a busy shop, so sometimes you have to wait a day or two to get your car in for work, but if there is an urgent problem they are usually pretty good about fitting you in to the schedule.
Their hourly rate is on the high/average end of things, but they do seem pretty fair about their billing. They don't seem to talk you into work you don't need, and they are willing to explain what you need done and why.
It's car repair, so it's never fun or painless, and eventually it's going to cost you a bit, but Moss Alley's friendly staff doesn't make it too painful.

Moss Alley is very good about telling you what's going on with your car, and honest about whether it needs to be fixed or not. We've grown to trust them quite a bit. Best of all, they're right on Capitol Hill, so we don't have to drive out to Aurora and then try to figure out how to get home when our car needs a tune up.
