I love these guys. Every time I've gone there, they've given me the straight skinny about how to build a great sounding system. Everyone who works there is a true audiophile and is committed to giving great customer service. Also, if you're like me and don't have thousands of dollars to spend, they have a great selection in their "used" equipment room. Don't waste your time on a "big-box" store - just come here!
Pros: great service; range of equipment; knowledgable staff; good prices; no attitude
Cons: nada

GOT SOUND?
What is in a NAIM? (Sound people know this Word)
The store's logo “A Pretty Nice Place” is true, however; you will find that the engaging owner is a mensch who loves his clients as much as he loves his music. The owner, Robert, will show you a note or two about the Sound of Music; no, not the musical or the movie, the real sound that you hear coming out of those boxes. Hint: Take notes.
Robert will redefine sound; your ears will never settle again for less than the best or at least close. Do you have a system issue; Robert will have the answer for you. Robert offers up good advice on both new and used equipment. Hey, the crew came to my home and set up my system, I’m female and I do not claim to know which wire goes into that thingy.
Many wonderful Seattle Restaurant owners come in and speak with Robert about which system is best in their restaurants. If you are even considering the idea of a sound system, stop into this very nice place.

Hawthorne Stereo has a large selection of both new and used stereo systems. They also have a room in their store set aside for home theater and speaker equipment. The salespeople made themselves available to answer questions and they allowed us to browse around the store without following our every step. You can even tell them about the current equipment you have and ask what items they would recommend to upgrade your system (instead of fully replacing it). They are fairly pricey on their new items, but you can get some good deals on their used items.

Frankly, the most knowledgeable (seemingly, given my acutely limited knowledge) stereo folks I think you'll find in Seattle. A tremendous selection of used equipment, at used prices, which will outperform comparably priced new equipment you'll find at most big-box-retailers. Bring your own LPs/CDs and choose your components. Absolutely lovely, but prepare for audiophilic addiction.
