I suggest parking it in one of the no-nonsense yet cozy booths at New China Express. This is not a place I would take an out-of-towner for a "real Chinese food experience," but this place definitely has a lot going for it. First of all, their portions are ludicrous for the price you are paying-- I often take half home, turning $5 into two pretty delicious meals. Secondly, when you order the lunch option (which is always available, cheaper than dinner, and has a huge entree), you also get some tasty side options. If that doesn't do it for you, consider the freaking 8-foot TV in the back of the restaurant, or the lightning-fast service. I give this a solid three-star "good" rating for those nights when you're detesting the thought of cooking and feeling a little poor.

I am very torn about this restaurant! The food is delicious, and the portions always leave me bringing home food, however the servers are rude. One time, I ordered for delivery and the total came out to like $8.79 and all I had was $20. The delivery man, who doesn't speak English, was like, "Sorry no change" and I was like well this is all I have! He goes, "I remember you later." Needless to say, he did not remember me later and I was stuck giving him a $11 tip! RIDICULOUS. On a better note...order the Orange Chicken lunch special with egg drop soup, fried rice, and an egg roll! You will love it!

Food is cheap, and they're open late...don't expect a five star meal though. Bang for your buck, if you don't need anything fancy, but want some tasty food...New China Xpress is the way to go.
A tip for those who are hungry...order to go, you get more food than if you order in :)

Try the tofu with soft egg rice. Amazing! The servers always laugh at me when I order this side dish as my main entree but my Chinese friend claim it is because the egg rice is the Chinese equivalent of Chicken noodle soup- something mom makes you when you're under the weather. The restaurant is also open late.

New China Express is not too bad of a restaurant, by Ave. standards. The food is not anything special, although I do like the shrimp fried rice. The prices are cheap, maybe the cheapest of all chinese food in the area, but you pay for it in the quality of food. However, the food comes quickly, the service is very friendly, and it stays open extra late, making it a popular place to come to after some late night studying.

I like this Chinese restaurant in the University District for the "lunches" they serve (which can be ordered any time of the day) - they come with soup (their hot & sour soup is good) and an egg roll plus rice (steamed or fried). They have some good dishes and the prices aren't bad at all.
