The production of Addy, performed by the Seattle Children's Theatre at the Flynn Theatre in Burlington Vermont , was outstanding. I am a native New Yorker and have many experiences with Broadway plays and this production was 'up there' with the best. The performers were extremely engaging and the children (and the adults) really connected with them. I don't believe I have ever seen a theatre full of children so engrossed in a performance before...you could hear a pin drop. The script was true to the book. The scenery and props truly depicted the era portrayed and transformed everyone back to the period of the Civil War. My class and I were right up front and I believe it was the first experience of a live show for my third graders. I would encourage children and adults to see this wonderful performance of the struggles of slavery in our history. Again...bravo to the performers!

The Charlotte Martin Theatre is the larger of two stages at Seattle Children's Theatre (SCT). Contributor
on 08-29-2006
The Scene
The interior echoes the deep jewel tones and colorful confetti carpeting of the lobby. Each entrance is decorated with bright red neon and whimsical figures. There are 485 padded seats, with carpeted tiers up front for kids to wiggle around and get a closer look. A soundproof quiet room lets everyone enjoy the show in peace. The theater is angled sharply to give everyone a clear view.
The Background
The theatre's namesake, Charlotte Martin, was raised in a log cabin in Montana. She married Clarence D. Martin, who later served as undersecretary of commerce for presidents Kennedy and Johnson. Before her death in 1987, the Martins gave to many educational causes. Their largest contribution--$1.2 million--went to Seattle Children's Theatre: $1 million towards the building and $200,000 for scholarship tickets for young people who otherwise wouldn't be able to attend the theater.
