WaMu is a great bank. Their new free checking account, is really all that. First of all, it's *truly* free - there are no monthly fees, no fees to talk to a teller, no fees to call the 800 number and no fees to bank online. On top of that, you get free checks for life (cool!) and 3c back on every debit card purchase you make. Those are some pretty nice perks. I also like all of the charitable work that WaMu does in the community. They recently partnered with Oprah on a Habitat for Humanity project and the list goes on. I hear they're pretty good to their employees to, so that may be why the tellers I've encountered have always been friendly and helpful.

I have done business with several banks, and found Washington Mutual the friendliest. Bank of America has many unscrupulous ways to trick customers into paying hidden fees, and at times I wonder if they're really on the customers' side! But Washington Mutual shows leniency and respect in ways that I have not found elsewhere, like allowing me to deposit cash near the end of the day if I accidentally overdraw earlier, without having a finance charge, or not charging people from other banks $1.50 to use their ATM's.

You may have heard all of those comercial's with the slogan "More human interes". That would have to be Washington Mutual Bank. If you are out there looking for a bank that has absolutely no fees, this is the one. Now they really don't have any fees, they are truthful about that. They don't charge you for calling their 800 number, their free checking has no minimum balance requirements, they have free online bill pay, and on top their tellers and management are super nice.

I have been a member of Washington Mutual for over four years and thus far have had only one bad experience at the bank. I have experienced far fewer fees and charges than most banks and have found the staff to be helpful when problems do arise. I also use online banking which is extremely simple and convenient. The bill pay system is completely free and allows one to manage their finances quickly and easily.

I would check out Washington Mutual. I only use them for a basic checking account. The service has been great and they have plenty of locations in the Greater Seattle area. Plus, the basic checking account services are free. You'll just have to pay the ~$10 whenever you get a new book of checks. You'll get a few notices from them trying to upsell you into other services, but this is well worth it for the checking account.
