We looked at St. Matts and West Hillsborough School, decided on WHS. SM was too restrictive and too small for normal child development. We are very happy with our choice.

This school is not as good as several other local schools. Although they do a good job teaching children to be good people of good character they do not do a good job of educating children. The school is very small so they have very few extracurricular activities like sports, art, theater. We know two families that chose Saint Mats. One family already withdrew one of their sons who went there. The other family is planning to switch to Crystal Springs when their kid gets to middle school age.

This school reminds me a lot of the movie The Stepford Wives (the original good one, not the remake). The wives are primarily stay-at-home homemakers, and they ostracize the few families that are not. Several of the children have learning disabilities in each grade, and that slows down the class. The teachers are average at best with many close to retirement. The facilities are terrible. The principal left last year after a stormy tenure, and there is a temporary head of school now. The school is associated with St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, and there is a bad relationship between the school and the parish because the parish is heavily funded by the school (you would think it would be the other way around!).
In summary: very mediocre education, very bad social environment, constant turmoil in the administration, very unstable faculty, bad facility. STAY AWAY: we wish we would have had this advice 5 years ago.

I agree with the comments left by anonymous about Saint Matthews Episcopal (SMEDS). We visited the school and talked to several families before choosing to go with one of the excellent public schools in our area. The cost of St. Matthews is very high, and the value delivered is very low. They appear to be on a constant fundraising drive, and the parents are also expected to volunteer a lot of time in the school and at fundraising events. Their students are not sought after by the best private middle schools and high schools in the area as they tend not to have a superior education and are very snobby.

My friend went to this school as a kid and speaks highly of it. I walk by it every day. They are located in a building right behind the church, and their recess is held in the beauty of the church yard where they can run and play to heart's content. They have their own basketball court that is totally fenced in, and there is also a day care center for the younger kids. The kids here all wear uniforms, which can be a blessing the way some pre-teens dress these days.

Saint Matthews Episcopal Day School offers really good education with an emphasis on smaller classes and individual attention. I work in the daycare industry and I got to know a lot of daycare businesses in the area. Saint Matthews Episcopal Day School really offers really good services to parents in the San Mateo county. I highly recomend the school.
