Located at 291 South market Street, a great location for a great theater...great place to spend an evening...This is arguably one of the best theaters in San jose given its location and the choice of plays...I saw the Magic flute and loved it...very well adaptised and acted out by the characters...try this place if you dont have anything to do and are in the mood for theater

This theater venue is really a nice and cozy environment. We recently saw Making Tracks (musical) and Avner the Eccentric (mime/clown) and enjoyed both. All of the lower level seats provide good viewing of the stage (we sat in the last row for Avner, row J middle for Making Tracks). The acoustics were good overall (Making Tracks) but the music was somewhat muffled. At first we couldn't tell if it was a live band or not. They're located behind the stage which may have diluted the music a bit, causing our confusion, is it live or is it Memorex. We're used to the theaters in SF where the orchestra is right up front. Overall, a very good theater to see live shows and musicals at a reasonable price. It's also really near lots of good restaurants so park in the parking lot next to the Rep and walk to any restaurant nearby (Spaghetti Factory, Peggy Sues, E&O Trading, Hawg's, Gordon Bierch).

I have never been disappointed in a show! My husband and I lived in Boston and went to Broadway touring shows monthly, so we were skeptical about a non-Broadway production. We went to see Big River a few years ago and enjoyed it so much, we signed up for the whole season! We love the fact that from the peninsula, San Jose is less complicated (parking, traffic) but we don't skimp on quality. The coolest thing about AMTSJ is that you can rent the costumes from the productions. I rented a flapper type dress for a 30th birthday party and it fit great and wasn't flimsy like something I could get at a normal costume rental company. And the price was not too bad (I honestly don't recall, but I'm a cheapskate, so it had to be reasonable).
