More
Historic Alum Rock Park was a hot spot back at the turn of the century. It was believed at the time that the mineral springs had curative properties. People would come from miles around to bathe in the water. There was a trolley to bring visitors up from San Jose. Over the years, Alum Rock Park had a carousel, a snack bar, a swimming pool and even caged wild animals!
All of that is gone now. In the 1960's the park was returned to a natural preserve. But you can see some interesting remnants of the park's history.
As you enter the park, you'll drive under a very old concrete bridge. That is actually an old train tressel from the railroad. It is one of the oldest in the state still in existence!
In the lawn area, you'll see a white gazebo. In the 1960's spring water was piped into the gazebo and visitors could taste each of the different types of mineral water! I remember doing this with my brothers and being amazed that they would drink it!
If you walk north from the gazebo along the paved section of the "Creek Trail" which follows Penetencia Creek, there are stone archways protecting the old mineral springs where visitors would collect mineral water. You will even see the ruins of the old bathing pools where turn of the century visitors would submerge themselves.
There are miles of beautiful hiking and equestrian trails to explore. If you explore the creek beds, you may locate rocks with fossilized sea shells in them! These sea shells are there because millions of years ago, Alum Rock Park was a beach! If you find these rocks, please do not remove them, they are very rare. If you are unable to find them, you can see large examples on the far end of the main parking lot.
Alum Rock Park has a nice children's play area, a visitors center and the Youth Science Institute where visitors can see owls and other animals up close!

Amazing work done by Barron Storey (Perhaps worlds most infuential underground artist) where an attempt has been made to capture the sadness and sheer sorrow of the war in Iraq. He has tried to capture and call it "Black Iraq". A must visit for all of us to understand what people and our forces are going through!!!

Once you step inside this store you think you're in the best place to buy ski/backpacking, etc. equipment. It's a beautiful well set out store; however, the sales staff are not the best at pointing you in the right direction for what you are looking for. The prices are quite a bit higher than other stores, and you're not necessarily getting better service. If you know exactly what you want, it might be a good place to go, otherwise, shop elsewhere.

Bay 101 is one of the closer casinos for those living in San Jose. They offer a variety of casino games, including Texas Hold 'Em poker. Aside from gambling, they also have dining and gift shops. On certain days, they hold tournaments. I suggest anyone looking for a thrill to go to Bay 101 and try your luck. It's an excellent place to enjoy yourself, win or lose.

Big 5 Sporting Goods has a wide variety of items to choose from, whether it be fishing or soccer or camping, and anything inbetween. This store is disorganized though, and it's a shame. I like how they often have sales outside and everything is really cheap and if they don't have something in stock, they will order it for you. Great service!

The customer service is HORRIBLE.
This is the worst customer service I have received from any shop of any kind in united states in last 18 years. I bought the bike from them
instead of big chain shop because they offered good service.
But when I took it to service the bike first time the staff was extreemly arrogant. They asked me to come after 4 days and the owner
started giving lecture on why the customer should learn to service the bike at home. (He had already charged me for service)
Also he used very bad and very uncivilized language. He was extreemly arrogant. So please don't make the mistake I made.
NEVER EVER buy from THIs SHOP. This shop offers worst service in the world. The people work there behave like they don't need any business from you. They talk sweet only till you buy from them. Once you buy the nightmare begins. You are better off buying for low end bikes from
target , wallmart, costco, high end bikes from RAI or any other shop
you are familier with. IF you buy from this place you will regret for life.

The san jose public library is great. This cambrian branch library used to be small and still great, the librarians helped me find the books I needed and every time I went to that library to get a book, I can always walk out with it in my hand so I am sure you will always find the book you are looking for. They now have closed down the library to rebuild a new and improved one but I am sure it will be just as good, my kids always go to that library for all their books, and report information, etc. So visit the new and improved library in Fall 2006!

The Children's Discovery Museum of San Jose is fun in every way- Even the building it is housed in is architecturally unique and painted purple!
This is a great place to take your kids and at the time I went , they even offered free admission to families in need on certain days.
The exhibits are all hands on- open things up, touch everything, make things, play with everything! You won't find anything behind a velvet cord here!
