Historic Alum Rock Park was a hot spot back at the turn of the century. It was believed at the time that the mineral springs had curative properties. People would come from miles around to bathe in the water. There was a trolley to bring visitors up from San Jose. Over the years, Alum Rock Park had a carousel, a snack bar, a swimming pool and even caged wild animals!
All of that is gone now. In the 1960's the park was returned to a natural preserve. But you can see some interesting remnants of the park's history.
As you enter the park, you'll drive under a very old concrete bridge. That is actually an old train tressel from the railroad. It is one of the oldest in the state still in existence!
In the lawn area, you'll see a white gazebo. In the 1960's spring water was piped into the gazebo and visitors could taste each of the different types of mineral water! I remember doing this with my brothers and being amazed that they would drink it!
If you walk north from the gazebo along the paved section of the "Creek Trail" which follows Penetencia Creek, there are stone archways protecting the old mineral springs where visitors would collect mineral water. You will even see the ruins of the old bathing pools where turn of the century visitors would submerge themselves.
There are miles of beautiful hiking and equestrian trails to explore. If you explore the creek beds, you may locate rocks with fossilized sea shells in them! These sea shells are there because millions of years ago, Alum Rock Park was a beach! If you find these rocks, please do not remove them, they are very rare. If you are unable to find them, you can see large examples on the far end of the main parking lot.
Alum Rock Park has a nice children's play area, a visitors center and the Youth Science Institute where visitors can see owls and other animals up close!

Green as far as the eye can see. This club is meticulous in the upkeep of the lawn. It is really beautiful, not to mention pretty exclusive and posh. I was able to get my sorry self in here due to my familial connections. My uncle is a complete golfing fanatic and wants me to learn how to play. He thinks Coyote Creek has the best golf course and who am I to disagree. It certainly looked pretty close to perfect the last few times I was there. The employees are extremely cheerful and courteous. They don't like to say no for any reason to their cherished members.

Los Lagos is really easy to get to --- even from all the way in Saratoga. The course is nice, the driving range is great and a steal of a deal, and the pro shop has really knowledgable and friendly staff. They have reasonably priced golf lessons too. I enjoy spending the $8 for a large bucket of golf balls and spending an hour at the driving range here. The wait isn't bad, if there is one at all. May not be sophisticated or nice enough for the posh golfer, but for a newbie like me, it's great!

The san jose public library is great. This cambrian branch library used to be small and still great, the librarians helped me find the books I needed and every time I went to that library to get a book, I can always walk out with it in my hand so I am sure you will always find the book you are looking for. They now have closed down the library to rebuild a new and improved one but I am sure it will be just as good, my kids always go to that library for all their books, and report information, etc. So visit the new and improved library in Fall 2006!

Excellent place for big parties or events! The grounds are wide open, and the banquet rooms are really spacious. We had high school dances here, which was conveniently located. I've been to festivals here and they are organized well. The eating area is great with all the shade and there is enough room so that you will not feel crowded no matter how many people there are!
