I try to come here as much as I can when I am home in Cupertino. Although the restaurant itself is rather small, and the dishes are somewhat overpriced, it's still one of my favorite restaurants. My favorite dishes are the roti and the gado gado. I haven't found another restaurant that has dishes like these. I wish I had a recipe of the curry they use for the roti because it's one of the best I've ever tasted. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone who enjoys asian cuisine or just wants to try something new.

I had been going to this restaurant ever since it opened, and for the first couple years, the food had been excellent. However, I went about a month ago with a friend, and to our disappointment, the food and service was bad. I simply thought that maybe they were having an off night since all my previous experiences were good. So, last night, I returned with a friend from out of town. That was a mistake! Not only was the service bad (i.e. the waiter poured cold water into our hot tea cups; the waitress looked annoyed that we walked in half an hour before closing; the waitstaff started sweeping the floor and putting chairs up while 4 tables of people were still having dinner), but we both became very ill from what we ate. Once we returned home, we both had gastric distress. I'll save you all the gory details, but I was praising the porcelain god. It was absolutely horrible. Until last night, it had been 25 years since this has happened to me due to food from a restaurant, and considering that I've eaten in my fair share of dumps, dives and holes-in-the-wall (including those in 3rd world countries), this restaurant accomplished quite a feat. I have never written a bad review of a restaurant before, but I felt that I really needed to warn people.
Cons: Bad Food, Bad Service

This place is overrated. Although I'm not Malaysian but the food here sure looked and tasted like Chinese food, not to mention the place is run by Chinese (mandarin) folks. Upon sitting down, 2 min later the waiter popped up asking if we were ready to order and of course not, since we were just on the 2nd page of the menu. Another 2 min later, another waiter appeared to ask if we ready to order again and to shoo him away, we ordered the Roti appetizer.
Finally, we figured out what we wanted and ordered:
- Sarael Prawn
- Princess tofu
- Kangkung (Ong Choi)
- Mango Chicken
- Pineapple Fried Rice
In less than 5 min after we ordered, all our dishes arrived. Just seemed a lil odd to me that they can whip up all those dishes that fast when the restaurant was also full house. The pineapple fried rice wasn't very warm and nothing really piping hot so makes me wonder if all the food is pre-cooked like those fast food joints at the mall and they just scoop up the food into the dish.
As for the taste of the food, OMG...the Mango Chicken was the worst - too much red sauce that it looked and tasted like sweet-n-sour chicken. Princess tofu (a recommended dish on their menu) is like your typical chinese dish, some stir-fry seafood with lots of oyster sauce and decorated with pieces of fried tofu. The pineapple fried rice had no wok-flavor whatsover and kinda bland. The prawn dish was ok...some shrimp paste flavor but nothing rich in flavor. The only decent and probably most authentic dish was the ong choi but then again how hard is it to stir-fry some veggies with pre-made shrimp paste?!
Pros: moderate prices
Cons: mediocre food

We had the most horrible experience ever at a restaurant . We were 4 adults and 2 small 7 month babies . We went there , ordered food . Food was ok . So far so good . Then came the check . They had added $ 10 to the $ 68 bill as gratuity for a party of six or more . I went and asked about what service did they provide for 2 7 month old babies and they said we gave them high chairs . I refused to pay the forced gratuity charge of $ 10 .They sent 4 people to my table and tried strong arm tactics but I stood my ground . Then they took off the charge and I paid the amount of $ 68 ( with a $ 0 tip ) . Then they came and fought with me about why I had not written a tip ( imagine the nerve ) and told me to never come to their restaurant again . I am writing this because i don't want anyone else to go through this nightmare again . Please be careful and avoid this restaurant .

It's a small restaurant and every time that I've gone, it's been crowded. The food there is good. It is a bit on the pricey side (compared to other Asian restaurants).

We recently found out about Layang Layang and has already become a frequent customer. They have an extensive menu with food from Malaysia, Indonesia, India, Thai, and China. We loved their Roti pankcake and their noddle dishes. The price is reasonable. Just make sure you get there before 11:30am for lunch and 6:00pm for dinner. They get very crowded on the weekends.

The parking is pretty bad (only choice is the residential street) and you can expect to wait during main dinner rush. They take reservations for larger parties which has worked well when going out to lunch with coworkers.
The restaurant is small inside and don't expect overly quiet dining. If you're unfortunate enough to get seated in the back area, you may find that the bathroom door hits your chair as people make their way to it :-)
PROS: Great tasting food
CONS: Small, can have long line during peak hours

Being a Malaysian, I might be a bit more picky. I think Layang-layang is good at several dishes but not all of them. For roti canai, I don't think it can wrong any Malaysian restaurant. Satay is so-so, a bit too oily. Indian Mee Goreng (dissapointment), Char Kueh Teow is pretty good, but I think Penang Village at Coleman is better in this dish. Bak kut teh is just okay, but I have yet to find any good bak kut teh around Bay area. Dish I always order, the princess tofu and the chow-fun (flat rice noodles).
Other dishes such as curry beef, ikan asam, baked fish, I will avoid, they are not tasty.
Vegetable dishes, kangkung and okra can't go really wrong with belacan and dried shrimps in any restaurant.
For dessert, cendol, kaya pancake are good. Ice kacang is too big but still good.
Cons: No reservation on Fri
