A good, caring, clean place my friends have used several times: the SPCA San Francisco.
They offer Kitten Kindergarten and pre-puppy classes which come with a $25 discount on adoption costs. http://www.sfspca.org/news/060725_kittengarten.shtml
The SPCA is very progressive organization, with a new, spacious, and humane adoption center: Maddie's. No cages and kennels here... instead, a spacious condo for each animal!
http://www.sfspca.org/adoption/maddies.shtml
SPCA has been at the forefront of the feral cat population by helping trap and spay/neuter feral cats, and socializing feral kittens so they can be adpoted, thererby breaking the cycle.
This is Kitten Kindergarten info from their site:
The San Francisco SPCA is pleased to announce the return of "Kitten Kindergarten," classes for people who would like to prepare themselves for kitten owner/guardianship. We have had so much success with our Puppy Classes, that we would like to carry that over to benefit our young felines and their families-to-be. Our experience has proven that adopters who are fully prepared for the realities of pet ownership make better "parents" for our homeless cats and dogs. Our ultimate goal is help these homeless pets find -and stay- in loving homes.
Here is what you will need to know about KITTEN KINDERGARTEN at The SF/SPCA:
Attend our FREE Kitten Kindergarten class prior to choosing a kitten and learn basic tips on kitten care. Qualified adopters will receive a $25 discount at the time of adoption. Discount is not valid if the adoption takes place prior to taking the class.

I work with many groups that come to San Francisco to work on volunteer service projects. Some of these groups are schools and churches throughout the United States. I have heard wonderful feedback about their experiences with St. Gregory’s Episcopal Church http://www.saintgregorys.org/ . On Fridays, from 3:30 to 5:30pm, they serve nearly three tons of food to about 300 local families & individuals offering groceries to everyone who visit. They also do a Food Pantry one Sunday each month. 500 De Haro Street. You can call Paul Fromberg for more information or ask for his email address.
Keep up the great work!

I had the chance to visit The Welcome Ministry and I found it to be the most loving and caring place that provides individual care and counseling to its homeless and hungry friends. Their website is http://www.oldfirst.org/welcomeministry/main/ and they are located at 1751 Sacramento Street. I spoke to Reverand Megan Rohrer when I went there and she was amazing. Call her if you are interested in volunteering or ask for her email!
They really do amazing work here and could use your support.

Cares about the customer beyond the call of duty - in my case over15 years. If doing business in a professional way is important to you then this is the Insurance Company to pick. One of the things I miss about leaving the State is being able to use Dan's Agency.

This was the first knitting store I found in San Francisco. It's a lovely shop, with a large selection of yarns. The staff is always friendly and willing to help you figure out a pattern and what you need. They will special order yarn for you too, if they don't have what you need in stock. They do classes and also have a 'drop-in' time went you can knit together and get help with your project.
