For six years a bit over a decade ago, I passed by this bookstore five days a week on my way to my elementary school. I only entered it several times then, but I still remember what a wonderful selection of children's books they have.
Several weeks ago, I passed by this bookstore while on a errand, and decided to drop in it since I haven't been there for so long. This bookstore is quite small compared to the regular bookstores I visit, such as Borders and Barnes & Nobles, but A Clean Well Lighted Place For Books is in a league of its own. Everything about this place is unique, from its name (which I absolutely love) to the types of books it carries to the authors and speakers who show up at the store occasionally.

I would say that Aardvark Books has a not terribly huge selection of used books but I do find something good every now and then. I like the fact that I can call the store and ask them to see if they have a particular book for me and hold it. They are usually very nice at that and I don't need to drive there just to check the stock myself

I've noted before that it's almost like someone currated all the different independent bookstores in the Mission so that they all had a different character and fill a unique niche so that it never gets boring no matter how many in a row you wander into. Abandoned planet is the scattered place where you have no idea where anything is - not quite as frenetic as the store on 16th (can't remember the name), but nonetheless, I betcha most people who come in looking for a specific book come out buying another they'd never even heard of before seeing it on the shelves here.

acorn books has a terrible selection. if you know the name of a book you want, stay away from acorn books. they have a very quirky selection, but they do have some cool books. i suggest acorn books if you like to walk around a book store and browse for books that simply look interesting to you. this is not the kind of bookstore you go to find that one specific book, because 99% of the time, you will leave empty handed.

Lord help you if you come into this place set on finding a specific book. I'm not even sure if the guy who runs this place has even a vague idea of what's buried under the piles and stacked way up high on the shelves. Adobe is about bibliophilic adventure. Indiana Jones and the search for the lost book. There is so much cool stuff here, you'll find books you've been meaning to read forever the moment you walk in. The longer you stay and are willing to unearth the depths, the greater the awards you'll reap.

This is a great little book shop to check out if you're in the neighborhood, or just on a lunch break. It isn't big, impersonal and overwhelming like most big book shops are, it is cozy and comfortable. The staff are very helpful and knowledgable, and probably have been working here for a while. I was easily able to find most of the books I was looking for, and even stumbled across a few new books that looked very interesting. The only drawback I found was that their selection was not as extensive as you might find in a larger book shop, which I guess is part of the trade off. Over all, it was nice to find a smaller book shop just off the main retail area of Market St. Definitely give it a try!

sell comics but cards as well. The people that works there are very
nice people. They give you generous discounts for things you trade
in, but not too much.

This is a great place if you are looking for books about California and especially its history but they also focus on Western America, rare literature and illustrated books as well as maps and manuscipts. They also buy books. Bookbinding and restoration services are also provided. I did it once and it took them 20 days to do it, too slow for me.

I wanted to buy a new computer and I came here to look at some. I didn't plan to buy one here, but they were so helpful that I ended up doing just that. I had an idea of what I needed, so they took me right to the computers that fit my criteria. Also, their selection was pretty big, which I guess is expected since they're a large chain store.
