Awesome food every time! We keep going back for more, especially the spicy gourmet "chicken" and garlic "beef". We've never been disappointed and always leave stuffed.
Pros: food
Cons: no beer

I eat at Hamano regularly and I always enjoy the freshness of their Sushi. What's great about Hamano is that they come up with new appatizers and rolls all the time, and they are beautiful and delicious. I look forward to trying their new dishes whenever I go there.
Pros: freshness, service

For me, and maybe for a lot of people, Herbivore was my introduction to vegan eating. It's not (in my opinion) the best place for veg food anymore now that newer, snazzier places have opened up around town. But it's still really great food (kinda comfort food actually), cheap, and delicious. I love their noodles, falafel, that refreshing mint drink. On a sunny Mission day, when the bold and the beautiful are doing their strut down the catwalk that is Valencia st, this is such a wonderful place to sit outside and be a San Franciscan.

I kept hearing about this place but it's in the Marina so it took awhile for me to get there. Now I wish there was one closer to me because I have no choice but to travel there repeatedly. It has a modern yet casual atmosphere--good place to sit down and enjoy eating great food (sort of a garden meets a Swedish wood sauna). If you like fresh local food as an ingredient in almost every item on the menu, you need to check this place out. They offer beautiful salads and allow you to have your own created with local organic farm produce. If you don't mind paying a bit, they have delicious organic juices made for you as you wait (this can take awhile so don't go there in peak hours if you want a quick juice to go). The appetizers and entrees range from Californian to Asian in style. If you want a hamburger don't go. They only offer free range organic chicken, shrimp and wild sustainable fish - the fresh halibut with seasonal vegetables and grains is amazing. If you care about where what you eat comes from, like the idea of fresh seasonal ingredients and don't want to spend a tonne, this is your place. Oh, and they also have scrumptious home made desserts and a good selection of local organic wines and beer. I give lettus 5 stars for being the best new discovery I've made in years!
Pros: great prices and access to fresh local organic food, delicious and diverse menu, sustainable
Cons: crowded, parking, wait

Delectable! The restaurant is very cute and cozy inside but we phoned in a take out order. My eyes were a little bigger than my stomach (and the portions are huge!) but it allowed for several meals. We tried the Alicha-begge (lamb), which was my favorite, the Kitfo (beef) -- a little too spicy for me but good, the Shiro (chick peas), and the vegetable sambusas. Everything was delicious, and I love the spongy bread too. I would definitely eat here again

This place is great - low-key in ambience, and great veggie/vegan options that will even satisfy those that usuallly only "do meat." I like the neatloaf and I always enjoy the accompanying salad (although you can also get nan) and I often get a smoothie. The "chicken" in the burrito actually tastes like chicken! The prices are reasonable and the staff accomodating. Solo diners are welcome and do not feel conspicuous - it is a warm, all-inclusive, low-key dining experience. They are a a welcome presence in the Civic Center area - a zone I often find lacking in good, inexpensive, and thoughtful eateries.
Pros: Great Vegetarian/Vegan Food
Cons: Civic Center location is lackluster

...including an organic wine and sake list, so ignore the "Insider Tip" that no alcohol is served. The food is amazingly tasty, and leave room for dessert. The Black Forest Mousse Cake is unbelievable. I love the celery root salad and the fennel/pomegranite appetizer. And, as far as I have tasted, all the entrees are delicious. Enjoy!
Pros: The food!
Cons: It can be a bit too quiet in the dining room sometimes.... I hate to yell while eating, but don't like to whisper either.

as a veggie - needed some creative, wholesome food during my week stay in san fran in January 2005 - and that's exactly what I got. busy weekday lunch crowd, freshly squeezed OJ and senational food.
I'm from Adelaide, South Australia, and we have no where near the choice for veggie places that San Fran has on offer. Wish I could live here!
Pros: creative, tasty veg food
Cons: bit more pricey than some others - but still reasonable
