This past Friday we had a new experience--Ugly that couldn't be covered up by the fantastic food, beer, and hot sake.
We didn't have to wait to be seated at 7:45PM which seemed odd, but a good thing at the time. But we were seated all-the-way-all-the-way in the back where it was hot and steamy.
We did wait for at least 15 minutes before anyone came by to ask if we wanted dinner. Our waiter smelled like smoke and looked a little disheveled, like he just rolled out of bed or something else. We ordered drinks and Tuna Tataki.
The drinks weren't brought out to the table until the Tuna Tataki was brought out-- It wasn't that busy for a Friday night. I have been there on nights where there are wall-to-wall people and never waited for a drink!
When the large Asahi beer, hot sake, edamame and Tataki were dropped off at the table the waiter didn't bother to take the rest of our order... No one checked back to see how we were doing--if they had they would have seen we were out of drinks and food--with no food on the way! I had to ask the Busboy to get our waiter. Patients dwindling!
We ordered more beer and hot sake and a series of rolls and sushi--very excited! Our excitement evaporating after 30 minutes went by--I got up to physically locate our waiter--I found him looking at this fancy new age Jukebox and he was surprised to see me.
Still it was a half an hour without a word or even visiting the table. The people I was with asked about our food order and like a deer in the headlights--it appeared that he forgot about our food. GREAT!
The sake arrived just barely warm--I sent it back! I didn't wait almost 45 minutes for hot sake to be just barely warm!
Again no one checked to see how we were doing, I couldn't taste a thing anyway! We needed more drinks, we needed more wasabi, we needed attention! We eventually needed the check and again NO ONE!

If you're not into the "scene"-type of sushi restaurants (you know which ones I'm talking about!), Amberjack should be at the top of your list. The staff is super-friendly and remember me every time I visit, which is at least once a month. I like that they have both good sushi and good noodle dishes so I can mix 'n' match them for a wide variety of meals. Seems like the Japanese version of comfort foods, epecially in the winter when I might want something hot to eat. The ambiance is very "neighborhood" and friendly -- a very comfortable place to go.
Pros: Service and ambiance
Cons: none

I ate dinner here with my boyfriend before heading to a show at the Razz Room. What a great meal! Our waiter was very attentive (and funny!) and the food was great - and you have to try the sushi. Loved it and would recommend to anyone.

Visiting the area on business and found this online. I quickly ordered delivery with an estimated 30 min delivery and they came in 15! The pad thai was amazing as well as the duck loompia and green chicken curry. I absolutely recommend them and I will be back for more delicious food off of their appetizing menu. Thank you!

This is a great place to have an evening out with your child(ren). As a graduate student at USF, I would pick up my son from his preschool and we would relax in the serene, peaceful atmosphere of Balboa Sushi House before we make our way to our Pacifica home. We've been going there for the past five years and it has become a special place for my son and me. Not only is the food well portioned and reasonably priced, the service is genuine and sincere. Having an active and energetic son, it was amazing what the environment did for the both of us. We would walk in with the sounds of water, luscious greenery, fish in unique bowls, classical music playing.....My son would walk through the resturaunt looking at all the details or he would grab a book near the bathroom to look at as we waited for our food. My son is now nine and after a recent visit, I was reminded on how special and wonderful this place is to us. We were in massive Friday traffic, hungry, and grumpy. After a quick decision to eat sushi at our favorite place, we enjoyed our meal with a quiet and calm conversation, reflected on the scenery of the resturaunt, and caught up with our kind friend (the waitress....I don't know her name). We left feeling content, peaceful, and fully satisfied. I highly recommend this place for quality Japanese food, wonderful service, and a peaceful environment. Parking can be a pain, but the #5 and #31 are convenient bus routes.
Pros: Service, price, portions, quality, and convenient to bus routes,
Cons: parking
