Lombardi sports has a great variety of sporting goods, shoes, and clothing. I particularly enjoy browsing their sale running and athletic shoes for a good deal – although they sell some higher priced clothing, their shoes are generally a good deal! They are conveniently located in Russian hill on Polk Street and have a great upstairs with more biking/kayaking/camping/working out equipment than you could ever want.

very knowledgeable and approachable staff. No snootiness. If you go during the day, it's quiet and a lot more fun. It gets packed around 6. The routes are not complex, the bouldering is fun but less challenging than planet granite.
A great way to either start climbing oir to maintain your condition when not climbing outside.

Pacific Bicycle on 4th street is a great, friendly place. I had just moved into the area and was searching for a LBS to take in a newly purchased (online) fixed gear to be double checked. I chose this shop because of the good reviews here on citysearch. I was not disappointed! They were very busy (it was a saturday morning) but as soon as i walked in someone who was already working on a bike told me i'd be helped in a minute. And just a minute or so later i had an employees undivided attention. He quickly and thoroughly checked everything on my bike, and explained everything he had done. I was charged a very reasonable price, especially for someone who'd never been to the shop and walked in without an appointment. I look forward to more business with this shop, i think it'll be my new go-to spot.
Pros: Service, price
Cons: In-store selection didn't look that large

I moved to SF from Boston about 8 months ago. Shortly after arriving, I took my 10 year-old mountain bike in for a tune up - shop did a fine job, after the tune it was like riding a new bike. The tune was pricier than I paid in Boston, but the results were much better.
Few months after that, my wife bought a bike there. The sales rep was terrific - answered all questions, was smart and funny, with great tips about riding in the city.
I bought a new road bike there last week - got a great price on an 06 model while most shops are selling off 05s. Different sales rep for me, but he was also extremely helpful, answering questions and taking care to fit all bikes I took out for test rides.
Speaking of test rides, in the last review, what nimrod would believe the bike shop should absorb damage done on test rides as "cost of doing business"? If that were true, what would stop every test rider from damaging the bike and asking for a discount on the sale price because it's damaged goods? The manager's decision not to cover cost of damage repair seems very fair to me.
Anyway, back to my bike purchase. I got an 06 Raleigh road bike, sale price $999 (list price $1299). The sale price was about $100 lower than cheapest I could find online, so it was a pretty good deal. Valencia sales come with 90 days of 10% discount on all parts and gear, free ongoing adjustements to the new bike, and a free full checkup at the end of 90 days.
The attitude of the staff is that riding is good, and good for everyone, not just the pros and gearheads. I wish we had this kind of shop in Boston...glad it's here in the Mission. Highly Recommended!
Pros: great sales staff, great repair shop
Cons: bike selection is good but not large

Got my bike tailor-fitted to my style: road commuting with occasional ventures into the coastal mountains. This is the shop I always go to for advice or just to chat about bikes in general. Great location right by Haight and
Golden Gate Park. Awesome selection!
Pros: Staff works their recommendations around your riding style.
Cons: Parking?

I take of advantage of the incredible student teachers...especially those with great experience and knowledge of anatomy. It's the best way to learn how to feel what you should feel and to take your practice and awareness to a whole new level. Relaxing yet challenging and great studio feel. This is a great way start pilates before you take a group class.
Pros: one-on-one service, lots of diverse equipment, ambience
Cons: sometimes loud with many little groups when it gets busy

I bought a single-speed bike from Freewheel on Valencia last month and am pleased with their service and my new bike. I recommend this shop to anyone looking for a bike. I went to six other shops in the city, and this one had the bikes I was looking for. They stayed late to put my bike together the day it arrived.
