We went here on a Thursday night around 9:30pm, which is half price Sangria night, FYI. Our waiter, Morty, chose some great options! We recommend the Fondue!!! The olives are mild but delicious. We also had the Sea Bass, Short Ribs and Sliders, all which were delicious, but the Sea Bass was our favorite. All the portions were great size and we were even too stuffed for dessert. I could see how it would be crowed and too noisy on the weekends, but the food definitely makes this place worth visiting. We will be back. PS? watch out for the fondue gas.
Pros: Great food, great portions, Sangria on Thursday
Cons: Parking, valet is is expensive

Ive been to Nihon few times that I must admit by now that I know few of the servers & the manger.
I told some of my coworkers to visit with me and was surprised that one told me that they got some "not so good" reviews here. Being surprised, I read them & I thought I should add my 2 cents even though I never write reviews since I disagree with most.
Most people complaints are due to them simply being cheap. Many people likes to hang out & go to great places but they are either cheap or dont have the money to party. It is a fact that Nihon is not cheap "drink wise' but I cant remmebr where you can get a cocktail now for less than $10 and thats what you seem to pay at Nihon, even though I always bought bottles there. The food is darn fresh "sachimi" I know as unlike most, I can afford to eat out & I know whats good & whats fresh.
I must advise those who budget to hang around few of the cheap mission bars and simply leave Nihon to people like us. People like us I mean are those who work hard, make good money & wants to hang in places with excllent service, they know you by name & take care of you. Plaese stay away if you cannot afford it.
Pros: Whisky, Service, Food
Cons: Out of the way

I don't typically write long reviews, but the food in this place is simply awesome. I have eaten at many different fine dining restaurants in San Francisco, and this is one of my favourites :) I love that their chef's tasting menu is not that pricey and it comes with wine pairings, how many michelin starred restaurant offer that in less than $100? it's such a good deal
i've also just heard from a friend of mine, she has this fundraiser deal from the restaurant (insider deal), you can get the 5 course chef's tasting menu at $90 with tax and gratuities included. Normal price is $75 without the tax and gratuities, so it's about a 15% discount. Not bad for a michelin starred restaurant! this deal only works if you present the coupon at the time of your meal.. you can contact her at cortezsanfrancisco@gma... and ask her for more details.. I've already gotten a pair for myself when i tried the restaurant out! =)
Pros: Best Deal
Cons: can't think of any yet

Having passed Zarzuela on the Hyde St. Cable Car for the past two years, it was finally time to heed the raves from locals on the Cable Car. We met our friends from Portola Valley to plan a trip to Italy. Arriving early in the dinner hour we had no trouble being seated. The service was very helpful since we had never eaten at a tapa resturant before. The selection was numerous and covering a range of tastes, so if octpus or snails are not for you, there are many other choices, including cold, hot and entree size options. We began with one cold and three hot selections and a bottle of excellent white wine. They were all excellent. We followed that with three other hot items and were equally pleased. Having more than enough to eat, we finished with wonderfully strong coffee, then crossed the street to have a small ice cream cone at the Original Swensen?s Ice Cream Parlor. A wonderful evening with good friends, plus the beginnings of a trip to Italy.
Pros: Food quality, ambience, staff

After a long day at work one of Thirsty Bears Vanilla bears will really hit the spot and at $6 for a 20oz you really can't complain about the price. If you get a little hungry the tapas are great beer munchies if you can believe that.
Cheers

What do want from a restaurant? Friendly, helpful service? Excellent food? Great location? Good prices? Fun menu choices?
This is the place to experience all of that.
They have a very good menu of small plates and petite entrees. My wife and had a wide variety of excellent food and a bottle of wine for under $70!

i loved this place. it's intimate and crowded, so i recommend getting reservations ahead of time, but the professional service, quality of food, and value can not be beat. i was a sole diner who went to get a free sangria with my greenzebra coupon. they didn't have room for me at the bar, so i put my name down for a table. the hostess or manager or owner then promptly got me a chair to sit down on while i was waiting. the atmosphere was great. the decor included spanish paintings of dali and goya if i am not mistaken.
but on to the PIECE de RESISTANCE! the seared lamb slices!!!! i'm not a big lamb eater or fan, but of all the lamb i've ever had in my life (just a few times), these were the best, hands down. the lamb slices were seared perfectly such that you could still see the properly uncooked portions of the slices in the middle, a ruddy pink-to redish color while the borders were clearly slightly browned from the searing. and beneath the lamb slices were onions or something like onions which the waiter tried to explain to me were not onions but were similar to it and were specially prepared by sauteeing them under the lamb itself while it was cooking to absorb the flavoring of the meat. then, when you put the lamb slice in your mouth, you must savor the moment: pay attention to the moistness of the meat, not dry at all; delicate, not chewy or rough, and you can taste the full flavor of the lamb and sauteeing.
Pros: superb customer service, ambience, sangria, and lamb slices!
Cons: crowded, busy, small venue, not good for LARGE parties but 6-8 is okay
