This is the place to take your out-of-town friends after a week of super-fine, modern San Francisco dining, or on their third or fourth visit to the City, when they might yearn for a good seafood dinner in a friendly, low-key place. The menu is simple; the style is old-fashioned; and the seafood (except for the oyster cocktail which comes from a bottle, I think) is fresh and simply prepared. If you like your seafood rare, let them know when you order. The service is friendly but rushed - this is a small restaurant with a crowd waiting for tables, at least on the weekend. I think of it as Tadich Grill out in the neighborhoods.
Pros: Good food, Neighborhood feel, Locals - location
Cons: Tourists - location, Not exciting

My wife and I have been going to Pacific Cafe for over 25 years. In the beginning, we weren't too sure how good the food was because the wait was so long, we ended up drinking too much wine.
We've tempered our drinking so we can enjoy the best seafood in San Francisco served by San Francisco's best waiter, Frank Gundry. Whenever we have friends or relatives visiting us, we always take them to Pacific Cafe. It's not tourisy, but local and wonderful.
The portions are big, the fish is fresh and delicious. The clam chowder is the best.
Wonderful menu at reasonable prices, great wine, great ambience.
We love it.
Pros: Great food, Great Menu, Outstanding Service
Cons: We live in Concord.

The Pacific Cafe has really good seafood. If you want anything else, you're at the wrong place. My experience as a whole was good except that they only had one waitress for the entire restaurant so the service was a bit slow. The free glass of wine while you wait is nice but be warned, you can have a long wait because this place is always packed.
Pros: Good Seafood, Free Wine!
Cons: , No Parking

The food and service were great. The portions are big, so next time we go, we'll probably share an appetizer because we barely had room for the entree! Be sure to write your name on the list they have because they don't take reservations. Sometimes the wait can be long, especially on weekends, so arrive early and enjoy the free glass of white wine.

Pacific Cafe has been one of my favorites for over 20 years. The fresh items are always just that - fresh. The food is well prepared and the service is very personal and friendly. Any questions regarding the fish selections are very well answered by the wait-staff. (My favorite is Frank.) Due to the popularity of the establishment, the wait can sometimes be long the later you arrive. As reported the free wine helps the wait. When very busy, once seated, it takes a bit longer to receive the entree, but it is well worth the wait.
Pros: Reasonable pricing, Well prepared, Friendly atmosphere

Knowing that the wine keeps on coming as you wait to be seated, I was sort of looking forward to a short wait. Unfortunately :) we were seated as soon as we walked in but regardless of that the waitress still handed us the complimentary wine at the door. The food was good but not as good as I have heard. The service is very attentive. I will definitely recommend this nice place. (By the way, try their ice cream. It's very tasty)

I went to Pacific Cafe on a Friday and had to wait for quite awhile but the free wine made up for it. Once seated the service was slow, but they were busy, once the food arrived it was delicious. Overall the atmosphere, the food, and the wine make this a restaurant I would come back to.
Pros: wine, food, atmosphere
Cons: no parking, long wait
