We were a little concerned when we first entered the place as it was almost totally empty on a Friday night, however, the menu looked tasty and the elegance of the dining room impressed us so we decided to give it a try. We are glad we did.
We both ordered the Russian beet soup as appetizers and found them to be quite delicious. I ordered the beef stroganoff and my wife ordered the Dover sole. They were both, quite simply, amazing. The stroganoff was the best I have had at any Russian restaurant so far. It was served at the traditional way and alongside pan grilled potatoes and vegetables. I cleaned my plate, a rarity for me. My wife's fish was equally stunning. I am not sure that I would call it authentic Russian, however, it was expertly done and was far better than the sole typically served at many British joints. We were too full to order dessert, however, it sounded delicious.
The service experience was okay. I will say they were quite attentive (there were only two other tables so the waitress was able to give excellent table/food service), however, I did feel that they were trying to pressure us into purchasing drinks when we really just wanted water as we were coming back from a long day at the hot beach. However, she was extremely friendly and we expect she was probably just new and following guidelines to recommend drinks to everyone.
I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone wanting delicious Russian food, and would especially recommend the beef stroganoff.
Pros: Excellent food, attentive service, beautiful dining room

I was born in Russia and even though I have lived most of my life in America I have still eaten mostly Russian food from my family, my friends, their families, and of course the few Russian restaurants on the west coast. As far as food goes, this place is as homey and fantastic as you can possibly find. The Borscht is just how i remember it, so is the rye bread, and especially the Kvas (which is pretty hard to find). Everything I have ever gotten in the restaurant has been amazing. The Service, however, is not the best and i think that you can mostly attribute that to them having (what seems like) only 1 waiter who is there pretty much all day. If you go there in the afternoon he will be attentive and pleasant, but by the evening he seems worn out and a bit out of phase. I would not say the service is rude by any means, but i can understand how it can come across as such at times.
Overall, if you want to try real, great, homemade Russian food, this is most definitely the place to go.
Pros: Food, Atmosphere
Cons: Hard to find parking and service needs improvement

I just found this deli, while looking for the old Odessa Russian Deli, which no longer exists. It is an incredible place for people interested in old-world foods: dozens of types of dried, cooked, cured, and smoked meats; pickled, salted, and smoked fish (smoked salmon $10/lb); house-made, pickled and prepared vegetables and condiments; rye, pumpernickle, european sweets and cookies; etc., etc. etc. Plus, the owner is very hospitable, will offer you a taste of anything, and is nicely proud of his wonderful store. A treasure out in the avenues.
Pros: selection, friendly, inexpensive
Cons: pushy Russian ladies
