My boyfriend & I visted SF for our anniversay recently & decided to try Zuni after reading some of the rave reviews. We were completely disappointed by the whole experience. We felt the menu was lacking, we ended up just ordering some oysters & a glass of wine and then leaving to find another restaurant because there was nothing else on the menu that we wanted to try. The service wasn't great either. Our waitress was very slow in bringing us water, bread & didn't bring us utensils when she brought the food. The quality of the oysters was so so. Zuni Cafe is completely overrated. We just didn't get what was so great about it. There are so much better places in SF for a much better value & much better food & service.
Pros: central location, easy to find
Cons: food, service

I came here for lunch a few weeks ago and ordered the wonderful house-cured pork chop (the potatoes on the side were just great!). We had a window seat upstairs overlooking the alley; there was construction across the street so it was a bit noisy. I would opt for a seat downstair the next time around. Dessert was slight above average (we had some kind of tomato pie with ice cream on the side).

I really loved my trip to Zuni Cafe - everything about our visit was wonderful: Service, Food, Ambience - it was all there. We sat upstairs, which I was at first a little perturbed about, but in the end was quite glad to do. It was less crazy and loud - much more enjoyable by our standards. The food was outstanding from appetizer to dessert. In particular, our service stood out was really compelling. The woman was extremely knowledgeable and helpful and happy to answer any of our questions. If only all SF waitstaff could be so fantastic!
Pros: Service, Food
Cons: Long wait to be seated

I just love Zuni. I had a nice little dinner last night, and I just loved the whole experience. The service was great. Our waiter was super helpful. The food was just wonderful. It just tasted so fresh and vibrant. I haven't had such a good meal in some time. Everything was cooked perfectly and the wine selection was wonderful.

A friend and I were going to a play and had reservations for dinner at the Zuni Cafe. We checked out this site for the reviews and had second thoughts, but decided to give it a try anyway. Thank goodness we didn't cancel!
When we arrived a half hour early (we had planned on a drink at the bar), the host thought to inquire about our plans and timing. Since we definitely wanted to try the famous chicken, we ended up getting seated early - during the "lunch hour" - at 5:45, so that we could ensure there was adequate time to prepare the dish (as it's cooked to order).
We had fabulous service! Our waitress was very friendly, entertaining and gave us great recommendations on wines and starters. Our chicken was AMAZING (now I know what all the fuss is about), as was our beautiful thin-crust pizza! When we asked about directions and a nice place to have another glass of wine before the show, the manager came to our table and took the time to share several options with us.
We had a fantastic experience at the Zuni Cafe!
I wouldn't hesitate in recommending it to my friends.
Pros: AMAZING chicken, lovely wood-fired pizza, efficient and friendly service
Cons: A little pricey - but a substantial amount of food!

Apparently you should make a reservation for lunch because we ended up eating in the bar to avoid an hour wait. Dessert was the best part! Lunch was pricey for what you got, the pizzas disappointed my fellow diners, but the burger was tasty. No side with it though. I'd go back, but only if someone else is paying. Our waiter was distracted, shall we say? We had to ask repeatedly for several things (extra lemon, sugar for ice tea) because he took so long to bring them to the table.

I have never had a bad meal here and friends from out of town all want to go here at least once. The decor is great and the food is wonderful.
And yes, the roast chicken is amazing! My only recommendation is to order a salad to go with it (the chicken and stuffing is more than enough for an entree -- but the salad makes it complete).
When I'm in doubt where to go -- this is usually one of the options on my list. Except for brunch -- almost impossible to get in the door without a reservation. I tried it once for brunch, waited 30 minutes for a table, but had an amazing time!

This is a pricey venue, but I'm not quite sure what your money gets you. First of all my date and I had horrible service. The waiter took over 10 minutes to ask us what we wanted to drink after we sat down. Then, when the food came we were very disappointed. I ordered a salad and literally only half of the plate was covered with food. Hardly any goodies, such as walnuts or cheese were on the plate. It was very disappointing. My date experienced the same problem with his plate - lack of food. Don't come here if you are hungry - you'll get robbed!!!
Pros: only waited 15 minutes for a table
Cons: lack of service and food

Attention jfrink
Perhaps you should take the time to order your wine by name not by pointing to it on the menu and assuming that the waiter saw where your finger was. When the bottle arrives, you (the customer) are meant to look at the bottle and tell your waiter yes, that is the wine I ordered or no that's not it. Once this exchange takes place and the bottle is opened and consumed, you own it. Take the time to focus on these details so you can enjoy your guests, or better yet be organized and order the wine BEFORE your guests arrive to avoid being distracted.
