I’d eaten a perfect meal at the trattoria a few week before, so I was looking forward to friends coming into town and taking them back to the Steps of Rome. Little did I know, the Trattoria serves a completely different caliber of food than the ground floor of Steps.
This is where the action is. The waitstaff massages you, they sing, they flirt. The place gets pretty wild, all in hopes, I suppose, of distracting you that the food’s nothing special. It was shameful to say the least to have raved about Steps of Rome to my friends and then take them to the wrong Steps, everyone all jazzed up for an amazing meal, and then to see them poking around their pasta in the midsts of music pumping and the waiters clowning around. Bummer. There should be some sort of disclaimer or warning signs to save others from making the same blunder.

I always enjoy dessert with a good cup of filtered coffee and Steps of Rome in SF definitely hits the spot. You can get a slice of tiramisu for $4.50 and enjoy a cup of coffee for $1.50. I guess it's not really cheap but a great place to bring friends or just hanging out in the city on a nice evening. They serve entrees as well but I've never been there for that. From what I've seen, portions are decent and look fresh. I definitely recommend the tiramisu or the taratufo.

Great little restaurant,
Can be a little busy at the weekends, but is well worth the wait.
The staff are amazing, they go above and beyond, they are very polite and make you feel like a million dollars, plus they can be counted on to throw open the windows and serenade the passer bys.
The food is great, very tasty and well presented. I reccomend the Chicken in a Vodka Sauce, very tasty.
The actual restaurant is in a prime location, right in the heart of North Beach.
