OK food, a little pricey, but that's what you get if you want the convenience of eating in Union Square. Cafeteria style setting. Weirdly decorated in 1890's style.

Tender and savory steak along with delicious baked potatoes! Tad's Steakhouse seems like the place to be at any time of day and also seems like home to many regulars. With that being said, I highly recommend eating at Tad's if you are ever around the downtown SF area. Although the price per meal is a bit on the high side, it is definitely worth every penny.

My husband and I have been going to Tad's since 1970 (we got married in 1973). We have continued with this tradition until now. At least once a year we go to Tad's for old time's sake. The steak, baked potato and salad with a couple of garbanzo beans and the good 'ol fashioned thousand island dressing brings a smile to our faces. The burgundy velvet wall paper and the simple tables and chairs always felt comfortable, why change this incredible decor from the fifties. And we always are happy to see at least one or too homeless people enjoying the same nostalgic meal with us. And then just as you are really to dig into the steak, ah, the german tourists are pushing and shoving to get in. They know a good thing when they see it. In August we will be celebrating our 35th wedding anniversary. We are planning a trip to Tad's. Or the new Tad's, we hear it has been remodeled. I hope that our memories will remain the same although the ambiance may have changed. Life is good!

Someone previously wrote that Tad's needed to be remodeled and updated. Well your wish came true! Closed for six months, this "hole in the wall" gem is now looking better than ever. The wonderful service and great prices remain the same. I'm not a huge Steak fan, so I always eat breakfast there which is a great value for the money.

I've passed by Tad's hundreds of times, and curiosity finally got the best of me. Yes, the menu (all 5 items) are posted on the wall. Yes, the interior is hideous (velvet wallpaper??) and unchanged since the Nixon era. Yes, the meals are relatively affordable for the Union Square location. To be fair, the steak I ordered was actually very good -- but just the steak, not the chewy and tasteless sourdough garlic bread or the forgettable baked potato. But unlike other quirky throwback places nearby that I enjoy (Tommy's Joynt, Lefty O'Doul's, the Owl Tree, etc.), Tad's feels to me like a stubborn holdout in a hot real estate market that just happens to house an antiquated, subpar steak house. The space itself has so much potential -- I'd love to see a complete makeover of the interior, menu, and concept -- so maybe the Tad's of the next decade will be one I'll return to, but this one I'm staying away from.
Pros: The grilled steak was tasty
Cons: Everything else

"You Might Be At A Cheap Steakhouse If..."
- The menu is listed on the wall
- You order at the counter like at a cafeteria
- The meat resembles a Steak-Um (thin, flat, chewy)
- The dishes are plastic and the cheap metal fork bends way too easily
- The entire meal has virtually no seasoning on anything (can you say BLAND?)
- Wine is poured from plastic carafes covered with pieces of saran wrap (one liter=$6)
- Homeless guy sleeping at his table in the corner looks way too comfortable
Did I enjoy my dinner? Not for the taste, but it inspired me to write one heckuva e-mail to my friends back home about the overall experience and provided plenty of laughs. Just remember, if you're buying a complete steak dinner (potato, salad, bread) for $12, keep your expectations very low and you'll be perfectly happy.
Pros: Inexpensive
Cons: Tasteless

the concept here is value, good steak, baked potato, and salad like you'd have at home, no big price, no one to tip. i waited in line briefly, got a perfectly cooked bone in new york steak, laughed at the garish wallpaper and decor, and took a break from stuffy waiters and wine lists. the place was filled with firefighters and other real people some with kids. i left with a smile, neither hungry or appreciably poorer, that isn't always the case in the big city.
Pros: great value, fast

I would definitely recommend this restaurant for its delicious, quality steaks, as well as prompt service. The decor can use an upgrade, but aside from that I rate Tad's a 9.5 outta 10!

This place is a fast food steakhouse. The food is comparable to Denny's. Actually, I think Denny's is better. At least Denny's has good bread and potatoes. Tad's bread is the cheap ones you find at grocery stores and the bake potatoes were tasteless. Overall, this reminds me of a charitable Thanksgiving function. VERY DISAPOINTED! I WAS MISLEAD BY THE OTHER REVIEWS!
