I've gone to Plouf several times both for dinner and lunch and everytime was amazing! If you're not fan of mussels, this isn't the place for you. Their menu offers other seafood and meat selections but they're not as good and their portion and prices are not equivalent to the mussels menu. Also another must is an order of frites along with your mussels! Don't expect amazing service and don't expect to take any of your leftover seafood home (safety regulations). It's in a great location - Belden Lane and it really feels like you're walking along a Parisien neighborhood with tables set outside and a hostess standing outside to greet you. Highly recommend dining at night when the crowd is a little bit busier and the alley is lit up.

The customer service was unfriendly and rude. The service ruined the meal. After a long wait for a table(had reservations), service was rushed. The utensils and plates were not clean. No space between tables. Food was good except for salad. The salad consisted of a few pieces of lettuce with bland dressing. Overall, unpleasant and tense environment. The fond memories of Plouf I had for so many years have been erased by this dining experience

I have a mix feeling about Plouf. On one hand, I love the foods, wines and the ambiance of this restaurant. However, I'm not a big fan of the service. I have been here so many times; some days the service were great and fast, but other days, it could be a bit rude/ignorant (I heard it's a European thing =p)
I have to say the mussels are really great. I'll definetely come back again.
Pros: Delicious mussels and pomme frites, great ambiance
Cons: Service can be dissapointing

I had the Mussels Provencale and Bouillabaisse. The food is too salty and the quality of seafood is sub-par! We also had to wait over half an hour from when we finished our appetizer until we got our entrees.
If you want a great Bouillabaisse go to Absynthe in Hayes Valley. I'd probably only return for drinks outside, but I wouldn't eat here again.

We've dined here several times - the food's been consistently good (do try the mussles and tuna tartar), service is a bit rushed (only because they're Very busy), but our waiter was attentive, plates were cleared promptly and everyone, starting with the hostess was professional and curtious.
To make the best of Plouf, come around 5:30, when they first open (make reservations!), sit outside, if weather permits, order a nice bottle of wine, desert's a must - enjoy.

My friends took me here over the weekend to celebrate my upcoming birthday, and it really was perfect for the occasion. I love the feel of Belden Alley, with it's twinkling fairy lights strung overhead and ample outdoor seating at every restaurant. Perfect for the warm weather we've been having right now.
We arrived about 30 minutes early and the host was kind enough to seat us anyway, outdoors and under a heat lamp. We shared a pot of steamed mussels and clams, which is a signature dish at the restaurant. They have 6 or 7 types of broth you can choose have your mussels cooked in and the amount of seafood was very generous. I also enjoyed the appetizers we chose: potato wrapped scallops and tuna tartare, though I have to say portions were tiny for the price. Frites were rather tasteless and the complementary bread was too hard for my liking. But the entrees we tried, both grilled fish, were also perfectly cooked and sauced. The trio of sorbets for dessert were a bit icy, but still nice.
Even with the minor disappointments, we still really enjoyed ourselves.
This is definitely a wonderful place to spend a leisurely night with a bottle of wine and some great seafood.
The restaurant's website is actually: http://ploufsf.com/

Just went and had a meal that would entice me back. Our service was a bit odd in that the waiter seemed a bit full of himself and insincere in his friendliness, and I could hardly understand a word. I had to ask him to repeat things. The service was also rushed--I say, is there a plate shortage in the kitchen?... But the food, calamari (superb) oysters (small but great), ahi tuna and fish and chips and pommes frittes (all excellent). I think they need to tune up their wait staff, train them a bit better, and it will be ok. I'm going back... make a reservation, regardless of the day of the week!..
Pros: Pommes frittes, Fish and Chips, Calamari and Ahi Tuna
Cons: Poor language skills, Rushed plate clearing

the entrees were just ok or almost not great. Oysters were awesome. I would go back for oyster & drinks but all of us felt the main dishes were not that good. This applies to the fish dishes and the steak which I had to cut away a lot of fat. Oysters were really good. But if it had not been for the exceptionally warm SF weather and dinning outside I would have been very disapointed and the weather has nothing to do with the restaurant. Overall diasappointed in the food. They need to step it up. With aggressive wait staff and poor tasting dishes just another overated tourist place. It wasn't bad but wastn't great.
Pros: outside, oysters
Cons: main plates, entrees, dishes
