Had some of the best pasta I've had in years. Better than anything I ever ate in Rome. I ate here a couple of days ago and the place seemed very clean, so not sure about the last few reviews. The food is excellent, the staff is incredibly friendly, and the gorgonzola ravioli was out of this world. I would eat here again in a heartbeat!
Pros: Excellent food
Cons: None

I have eaten here for ten plus years. Always found the food to be better than average. Over the past year or so, I have found that the food has changed, by that I mean the taste of the food. And now there is an insect issue to deal with. I hope that the calls to the health inspector will turn up some heat on the owners to get a clue. I think I will wait for a year or so and then maybe go back to see if they are back to the way it used to be. Otherwise, there are about 300 other places I would rather eat.
Pros: fun place to eat, romantic
Cons: UH...bring your own Raid

What happened to this place! It's been a couple of years since I last dined at this restaurant which had left me nice memories with the fun atmosphere and home-cooked-tasting food. I went back there last week with my friend, and had horrifying experience. I should have followed the warning signs at the beginning. The restaurant wasn?t nearly as crowed as it used to, and the waiter?s Italian accent sounded so fake. Food was tasted ok, but far from the level you?d expect for the prices. The famous Tiramisu does not live up to the reputation, suggesting some kind of a cutting corner process. I used to go to Steps of Rome Cafe just for the Tiramisu, but it wasn?t the same. Has the ownership changed? Now the good part. INSECTS (CitySearch won't let me use my precise word)!!! My friend ordered tea after dinner. The waiter placed a porcelain container of tea bags on our table, and soon a brown insect came out between tea bags! We screamed and the waiter took that back to the kitchen. We were seated by a wall. A few minutes later, I saw another insect walking on the wall toward us. I didn?t want to freak my friend out, so I just kept quiet and quickly finished the payment and left the restaurant. My friend later told me that the third insect came up on her side of table, and she got rid of it without telling me. Either I or my friend will never go back to the restaurant. Disgusting!!!
Cons: Hygiene

Terrible Food. Friendly staff, fun atmosphere if you like loud music. When placing our order the waiter could not hear a word we said and came back with things we didn't even order. All the food looks good.....but had absolutely no flavor whatsoever. Waste of money, calorie intake and time.
There is no moving space so everyone was bumping into each other. The birthday goers may enjoy the complimentary dance they get with the host.....but overall flavorless food.
Pros: Friendly Service,
Cons: Parking, Food

Located in the heart of North Beach on Columbus Ave., Steps of Rome is only 10 years old, but has made itself a staple of North Beach eateries. It is cozy inside with a true Italian menu to suit every palette. The service is good and cost is very reasonable. Although you may have to deal with tourists -- Steps of Rome is worth it.

My boyfriend and I came to the Trattoria and were very surprised that we enjoyed ourselves seeing that North Beach is very touristy. However, we were sat right away in this romantic little restaurant and greeted by a very nice young man. We had the involitini melazane sp?? (eggplant appetizer), pollo trattoria, gnocchi gorgonzola, and bruschetta. All very good and flavorful. For dessert we had a vanilla custard with strawberry sauce which was great. Overall a great romantic dining experience. Highly reccommended for couples !!
Pros: The top floor overlooks all of Columbus Ave.
Cons: Parking
