Love old places like the Tadich. Ate at the bar late in the afternoon of my only rainy day in SF. Nice server, good bread, sand dabs were delicious and also liked the sides of bok choy and potato. An expensive lunch at about $18 but worth it. Probably even better with a couple glasses of wine to soak in the atmosphere. Pros: Atmosphere, service, sand dabs Cons: a bit pricey

You may have to wait. The bar seating is a great place for one or two people. I have never had a bad experience in more than 10 years. The waiters can be surly and yet great. I had a waiter make his own special sauce for my calimari. The sour dough bread is the best in the City. My wife and I go here every time we are in the City. Pros: Good food and service. Cons: You may have to wait.

I came away wondering why I had wasted my time and money. To begin with I was forced to eat at the counter and find my own seat. I am disabled. I ordered an artichoke, fish soup and a glass of wine. I had to ask twice for the wine and water. A customer beside me actually asked for my bread when it didn't arrive before my meal. A customer on the other side had ordered a fried fish, and there was a pool of butter in the center of it when it arrived. The artichoke was hard and as the menue stated that it was steamed, I thought that it would be softer as one got closer to the heart. It only got harder. It was very difficult to get the waiters attention. He agreed that the artichoke was uncooked and offered to "put it in water." As he originally spoke an other language, I thought that was his way of saying it would be cooked more. No, he put the hot water from the tea caddy into the bowl. Needless to say the artichoke remained hard and impossible to eat. One could see where I had pulled off the leaves and the meat was still on the vedgtable. Not appetizing! I asked for the bill pointing out that the artichoke was inedible. I refused to pay the $7.00 for it and asked for the manager. The manager yelled at me so everyone could hear - "you expect to not pay for this when you have eaten all of this?" I pointed out that I ate nothing, that the meat was clearly still on the vegtable and inedible. He could not hear me for yelling insults and saying that he was charging me. I said that I would not pay. Then he yelled, "well don't ever come back", which was redundant as I have no desire to return. He then made a new bill, and said "I did not know that my waiter had put hot water on it" as if that made any difference. He then loudly yelled again "don't ever come back again!" You take your chances if you have desire to have palatable food and good service at Tadich Grill.

"I hope folks won't dismiss this review as sour grapes, but I just got back from eating at The Tadich Grill and the experience was substantially less than pleasant. I can live with brusque waiters and crowds. It is the financial district at lunchtime after all. However, considering what the meals cost, I was amazed at how bad the food was. Burnt bread, greasy uncleaned fish, creamed? Swiss chard with a big burned chunk cleverly hidden in the middle of the pile and 4 soggy and bland huge french fries that are called something else on the menu to make you think that they are roast potatoes. Hey, these things happen, I don't expect a five star meal every time I go out. What I do expect is for someone at the restaurant to care. I first told the waiter who listened perfunctorily and later on my way out mentioned the problems to the manager, who had apparently already been told by the waiter but hadn't come by to talk about it with us. The manager's response was effectively, "If you don't like it, go elsewhere." He pointed out that somebody else ordered what I had and hadn't complained. Hey, lots of people eat at McDonald's. That doesn't mean the food is good. This is only the second time in my life that I have complained to the management about the quality of food I received. I am appalled that the staff of The Tadich Grill cares so little about their customers. Don't they need us to survive? This place is a trap designed for stupid tourists and good 'ol boys. Oh, and as for their claim that it has been around since 1849....read the menu. It was a coffee shop for a while, it has changed names, locations, and owners several times, basically I find the 1849 claim tenuous at best. Sounds like more hooey to hook the tourists." Tadich Grill is a no frill seafood restaurant with New York style waiters. There is no reservation, so you must go early or prepare to order a few drinks at the bar while you wait. The seafood there is simply solid, my husband and I will always go back there when we are craving for seafood, especially for lobster and crab. One of our all time favorites is their lobster thermidor. Definitely must try at least once!!! Pros: Solid seafood, very fresh Cons: No reservation, very noisy

Tadich has been my all time favorite classic no nonsense gruff but expert service fish without the fluff hangout. We dine there at least 3-4x a month. We are known there as one of their "regulars" which means we get to greet and shake the hands of every seasoned and salty waiter who has worked there since the beginning of time, almost before there was fish. We ALWAYS eat at the counter; that is a must if you really want to experience the Tadich that locals so secretly covet. The banter between waiter,busboy,customer and the cooks (chefs) sets the atmosphere. Everyone here is what you see is what you get. This also applies to the menu. I love their plate of raw oysters to start ;with a heaping bowl of fresh cut lemon wedges and a generous basket of the BEST sourdough ever by your side, who can complain of their somewhat cheesey wine list!?! I then have the Crab Legs ( when you are a "regular", the waiters will also tell you very discreetly when they are fresh). Grilled Petrale Sole to follow or their poached salmon makes the evening sublime. Why do I live in one of the most expensive cities in the world? Very simple.....the food. May Tadich reign supreme for the next 100 years! Pros: tadich is tadich Cons: martini glasses are the smallest in town

We had to wait a long time to be seated. Once seated, the menu listed several types of wine varietals for individual glasses, but said to ask your server for types and prices. When asked, the server pointed out (gruffly!) the varietals already listed and walked away. We ended up choosing a half bottle that listed the winery. The server poured the wine very haphazardly and spilled some on the butter plate. When we received our entrees, the top sirloin steak with mushroom sauce was a bad cut, tough and not evenly cooked---below average. The pan fried sole tasted like a pancake and was mushy in places. The side of baked potato and creamy spinach was much more appealing. Once we were finished eating, it took a very long time for our server to acknowledge us and bring the check. All this and it was pricey!!! We won't go again. Pros: location, good bread Cons: service, food, price

I happened upon the Tadish 30 years ago and made it a must when visiting the City. Over the years Ive enjoyed everything except steak and plan to keep it that way. It simply has the feel of a place you would like in the neighborhood. Pros: Excelent food, Sophisticated Service, A nice feel.
