We went there for dinner on our day off in the city, as I craving some kabob. Ordered koobideh kabob, which I thought was below average.
Asked the waiter if I could change it to some other dish. The owner came over and gave me hell with his eyes and words for not liking his koobideh. Might I say, he was very rude. 16 years of dinning in bay area have not seen such rude treatment.
Interestingly, I visited their SJ location for dinner last month; it was closed! the window sign said: " closed for remodeling, see you soon". Later I found out it is closed for good due to lack of customer service. Dooh!
In any event, we won't be going back anytime soon, as don't want our evening to be ruined again.

Great representative of persian cuisine! Excellent service. Our server also made our persian martini which was awsome. Next time I visit SF, I'll definitely will go back to Maykadeh.

Maykadeh specializes in Persian kabob and rice dishes. Koobideh (literally means "ground") is a spiced ground beef and lamb kabob - very juicy and flavorful. The joojeh (chicken) kabob is also quite tender and delicately spiced. A few Persian stew specialties are also available, I recommend the Bademjan, which is a braised lamb shank and eggplant in a cinnamon-spiced sauce served with a heap of saffron rice. Careful - you'll go home and have cravings for it the next day.
The Kashk-Bademjan, an appetizer made from fried eggplant and a type of whey cheese is fantastic, as is the Tah-Dig with Gormeh Sabzi, a crispy rice covered with a vegetarian stew of spinach, parsley, fenugreek and kidney beans (I know it sounds disgusting, but it's heavenly).
Waiters sometimes take a while to get to you, but they're warm and friendly and quite helpful with the menu if you have questions.
There's valet parking - don't waste your time trying to find on-street parking in this corner of North Beach.
Pros: Delicious Persian Food
Cons: Can be a little heavy and salty - eat early in the evening and take a walk.

This is one of my favorite restaurants in SF, and I really love the food and atmosphere here. I live in North Beach and often eat out, and a Persian friend highly recommended this restaurant to me. It's best to go when you're really hungry as the portions are huge. I always order the koobideh and add the tomatos, onions and a little butter to the rice. This dish is only around $12 and you get a ton of food. The photos on the walls are really fun and interesting to look at. I love Persian food!
Pros: food is fantastic, ambience is really nice, service quick
Cons: none that I can think of

The restaurant itself is fairly tiny but the service is excellent. My personal faves are the Salad Shirazi (shee-raws-ee) and the chicken Koobideh or the Sultani (one filet strip and one ground beef kebab). Do not miss the Eggplant dip and try the "sumokh" spice on the table. It's a deep purple color and has a bit of tartness to it. Sprinkle some on your meat and Basmati rice (mmm) - it's divine. If you're feeling a bit adventurous, try the doogh - traditional yoghurt drink with fresh mint. And, if you have any room left after the platter of food you are served, try the Bastani - a heavy cream ice cream with rosewater, pistachio, and cream chunks. No, there is no "lite" version. Learn to love the couple of pounds you'll gain just by walking in - it's worth it! Parking sucks, but you knew that!
If you are willing to travel outside of SF (God forbid!), try Shalizaar - an even better Persian restaurant located in San Mateo.

My husband and I live in north beach and really like trying different kinds of food. Although we have a one year old, we still avoid chain restaurant and manage to have a meaningful fine dining most of the time. One of the few times that we went to maykadeh after my daughter was born, my one year old decided to have a tantrum over her Dora dvd. Not only the owner did not do a thing to calm her down(i.e. crayons, milk, bread...), but he also told my husband in the meanest tone that if we cant keep our child quite, we have to leave. As much as i like persian food and the ambiance at Maykadeh, I would never go there again. That was yet the worst dining experience I have ever had in or out of country. extremely rude owner. The food is ok and very pricy for its quality. If i ever crave persian food again, I would go to Alborz on Van Ness.
Pros: great ambience
Cons: very bad service, not child friendly at all

On our last visit the food was as good as ever (although one of us thought their dish over-salted) and the staff was exceptionally friendly and solicitous. Skip the valet parking, though -- either the valet helped himself to our stash of quarters or someone else did when the valet wasn't watching. Walk to one of North Beach's fine cafes or up Telegraph Hill afterwards instead.
