Back when I lived on the east coast, my friend Cliff used to wax nostalgic about a place called Pauline’s. He said they had the best pizza in San Francisco, possibly in California, and one of the top 5 best in the country, so when I moved to SF last year, I made a beeline to 14th and Valencia to check it out. Cliff was right. Their pizza is amazing.
The cheese, sauce and crust can all stand tall on their own, but the experience is made all the more exciting by the addition of toppings featuring fresh, local, all-organic meat and produce that run the gamut from the traditional to the exotic.
Daily specials include offerings like wild flower pizza, a meat special featuring all kinds of organic sausages and a vegetarian option that always goes above and beyond ho-hum peppers-mushrooms-onions. The décor is thoughtful, clean and lovely –think French countryside – perfect for an afternoon lunch with friends and family or a sweet little date spot.
The prices are a bit above the average pizza place, but then, this isn’t the average pizza place.

This is one of my favorite places to get a casual dinner in the city. The food is delicious, and the atmosphere is comfortable.
Their pizza crust is made from some secret recipe, and it is REALLY good. You can take home shells and store them in your freezer. I always order what ever the vegi special is. The ingredients are usually from the owner's garden. A recent favorite: strawberries, fresh ricotta and lemon puree. Sounds prissy, but was sooooo good. The salads are also delicious, again made with produce from the owner's garden. And the desserts are all made homemade - I especially like the sundaes and the butterskotch pudding.

Pauline's is a gourmet pizza restaurant that is excellent. They have a good beer and wine list and all their salad ingredients are organic. They have a room upstairs where you can seat large parties (10-20 people) which is great for birthday dinners. The neighborhood is a little bit seedy. Regardless, you can park pretty easily on Valencia.

Pauline's Pizza is in an odd location on Valencia, I think if you blink you might miss it. Do yourself a favor though, and pay attention. It is the general consensus of my household that Pauline's Pizza is the best pizza in the city. Thin crust, diverse topping selection, a tasty sauce and cheese, cheese, cheese.... and beer.
