This is what comes to mind when you think of a world-class dining experience.
I went here for drinks and dessert the other night and everything was fantastic. It's certainly a 'culinary experience'. The food is highly conceptual and experimental but executed well. By conceptual, I mean lots of foams, textures, presentation, and interesting flavor combinations (think basil sorbet).
The space blends industrial features with a streamlined 50's-inspired aesthetic. Prices are moderate to high but totally worth it. This place is pretty classy but not intimidating or rude as some fine dining can be. Our waitress was extremely nice and helpful even though we were just having dessert.
Definitely worth checking out!
They also have a cafe that's open during the day next door. It's kind of equidistant from Embarcadero and Montgomery BART stations.

If you want the real deal on all levels go to Tres Agaves. I recently went with a group of friends for margaritas and some various dishes. We really enjoyed the fish tacos and the guacamole was insanely good! We also had some of the slow cooked carnitas ? mmmmm?.so good. However you have to try the tequilas. We had a tasting party and learned about the real history of tequila. No shot glasses here, all tastings were served in appropriate spirits glasses. We had a fabulous time.
Pros: Excellent sipping tequilas, super great authentic food!
Cons: really busy after a ball game!

It broke my heart when I saw the old Compass Rose bar closed and boarded up in the lobby of the St. Francis Hotel. It was on of California's great bars. Then Michael Mina opened in the space and all is forgiven. The room and setting spell class and the food is tops. It's a hot spot for pre-theater, but I don't like to dine against a clock or a curtain time. So, I go later and take my time. Pros: Food - setting - location

Stumbled across this restaurant when we were walking down Clement St. So glad we did! The French food is amazing here. I recommend the escargo and with plenty of their fresh made bread, and their steak with pomme frites is to die for. The inside of the restaurant is very nice and the price isn't too bad. A great eat in the city!

If you're looking to go out for the night by yourself, then I'd definitely give this place a try. It's hidden and I really liked the ambience of the Parisian style setting. You have to sit at the bar if there is space. Bar is a bit small but I actually prefer it that way. Bartender David made great drinks and I really liked the friendly staff members. I forget the name of the blonde hostess, but I think she's very hot! Portion sizes were perfect. The pan-seared trout and the ahi tuna were perfectly done. The sauce wasn't over powering. Go and meet the frienly staff. Food is really tasty and it really was a gastronomical experience. It appears that this is my new favorite place. Will definitely go back for more. Oh, I forget! Nice weekend Jazz music too! It was very soothing.

When you walk in the clean and refined decor immediately portends the simple elegant food that follows. The chefs use of Japanese ingredients and techniques lends a unique twist the the standard California nuevo style. The tuna tartare is a poetic interpretation of a traditional sushi roll, replacing the salty sweet of the soy with decadent shaved foie gras. Great for a romantic night out.
Pros: Tuna tartare, black cod
Cons: Desserts

This ain't no burrito joint - ain't no taqueria. It's where you want to go for grand mexican food. We went there expecting a lot, and were pleasantly surprised to get more than we expected. The guac was fresh, spicy and just perfect. The Chilli Rellenos were the best I've ever had, and the red snapper was the freshest I've ever had in San Francisco. Even the variety of drinks impressed my fiance, and added to the excellent meal we were already enjoying. Two thumbs up big!!! I highly recommend it. Please make reservations to avoid a wait. The service is so-so, but overall makes for a great evening.
Pros: Excellent food - fresh and tasty
Cons: Service is kamsi-kamsa
