Open Mind music on Divisadero may not have the selection that Amoeba does, but they have a wonderful hand picked selection and an incredibly knowledgeable staff. Plus there is always an open listening station and you can listen to almost every record before you buy it. As far as I am concerned they have all the bests of every genre from down-tempo electronic to classic rock. I can spend hours in there talking with the employees and listening to records, and I never am able to walk out empty handed.

The closest thing we have in SF to my favorite NYC music store, Downtown Music. Good coverage of a wide swath of underground music scenes. Knowledgeable staff. And it seems just the right size for an independent shop, not that any nearby stores seem too big or anything… ahem… no, I like I Amoeba and all, but Open Mind is a good reason not to always go there for everything.

This is a nice music store located in Lower Haight. They have a great collection of cds and vinyls used and new. The selection goes across the many musical realms of house, techno, downtempo, jazz, blues, hip hop, reggae/dancehall, funk, soul, folk, rock, punk, and indie. They even have collections of vintage electronica, oldies, and exotica/lounge. The staff was helpful and nice.
