Hey – Rasputins is in SF! Cool. Oh wait, I guess it’s been a few years now, but it still catches me off guard to see a piece of Berkeley fallen out of the sky like a meteorite, crashed into downtown SF. No matter where they might fall, Rasputins still has the best used section. The upstairs where the new stuff is isn’t so shabby either.

This music shop, which has been a Bay Area staple for years, is a great shop for independent artists and obscure records. The Union Square location boasts posters of Bay Area music stars like Mac Dre and Green Day. When you first walk in, be prepared to be hounded by the security guard to leave your baggage at the front. Loud music may be playing, anything from rap to wild punk rock. Posters align the walls going upstairs of the Bauhaus, Joy Division, and other modern rock heroes. Used CDs and DVDs sell for very cheap here, you can stock up on anything if you take the time to look. The Union Square location boasts a lot of tourists, so be prepared for lines and crowds. This is a also a great place to sell your album if you are a local artist trying to make it big!

Rasputin Records is a great place to find some cheap music, especially if you are trying to avoid the bigger chain stores. They carry a pretty diverse selection of music and you can always discover something new. I believe there is another location in Berkeley if you are across the Bay.

The staff and the lay-out may not be the best, but Rasputin has a very wide selection of underground and hard-to-find music, especially those in the hip hop genre. Rasputin has an awesome used music selection that is hard to beat, both price-wise and selection-wise. The prices at Rasputin beats the regular price of CDs sold at chain storesm such as the Virgin Megastore up the street and the Sam Goody in the San Francisco Shopping Center, so that's a plus. And they sometimes have local artists there to sign autographs and such, adding a very nice flavor to the place.
